What: This is a non-competitive walk and is free of charge. The idea of Petaluma’s first World Diabetes Day (WDD) is to plant a small seed of community education and
involvement related to diabetes and healthy living. The event logo and color is blue, and participants are invited to wear something blue in celebration of WDD.
When: Saturday, November 14, 2009 10 am - 12 noon (rain or shine) - Special ceremony to be held at 11 am
Where: Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility
3890 Cypress Drive, Petaluma, CA 94954 (adjacent to Shollenberger Park)
Parking is available
Why: The number of people who have diabetes is increasing, but we can do something about this. Regular walking for at least 30 minutes per day, has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 35-40%. Regular activity helps to control diabetes.
Who: You, your friends and family, co-workers and neighbors, community leaders and health providers, artists and athletes, nature lovers and individuals who want to make a difference. Community organizations and businesses will be on hand to provide information and resources on diabetes, nutrition and exercise.
Participating groups and individuals include: (participants are still being invited and confirmed) Athletic Soles, Kaiser Permanente, Petaluma Health Center, Petaluma Wetlands Alliance, Phoenix Theater, David A Chappell, MD, Harendra K Punatar, MD, Mayor Pam Torliatt, and Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey.
How: Meet at the entrance to Petaluma’s Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility. Take a guided tour and/or a leisurely walk to enjoy the birds and surrounding beauty. Visit the wellness information tables. At 11 am, we will come together for a special ceremony and to form a human circle to show our unity in making a difference in the fight against diabetes.
