I was 7 in 1988 when I was diagnosed. It's interesting to read all the comments about the wording of Type 1 over the years. I prefer to keep my medical information discreet, but when I need to clarify to someone I usually state "insulin-dependent." On medical forms, when I check off diabetic, I write next to it "IDDM." It's been very eye-opening to me to learn from TuD just how many T1D diagnoses happened to adults.
I knew quite a few diabetics (all type 1s) growing up. There were two other kids in my grade at school (we knew because the parents had to bring us special, sugar free snacks on birthday days when the rest of the class would get cupcakes), I met other kids in the waiting room at my endo's office, and from diabetes summer camp.
