Oh dear. I can relate to that. I am unemployed and in the UK you can get a £49 voucher off the cost of your glasses. Unfortunately if you want reaction lenses (which I do as I am very light sensitive) you have to pay £186 for that. The £49 only covers the cost of the cheapest frames.
I then heard of a company that does not test eyes but makes spectacles for a half of the price - and takes the vouchers - but since I had already used the voucher I have had to cough up £98! Considering that I only get £170 for a fortnight I am having to live on tins and make sure that I am doing things where food might be available and quietly make use of that to keep eating this week! Today is the homeless soup kitchen thank God, so I will get something to eat. Get paid again on Wednesday! Needless to say blood sugars are swinging from one extreme to another!
After I had ordered the first pair of glasses - bi focals - I saw a programme on the television about the cost of spectacles and was shocked to hear that lenses cost about 25pence to make!!! And frames are also very cheap to make - I forget the figure - and opticians are making several hundred times mark up price!!! They have us over a barrel because people need spectacles and most are rather desparate to get them so will pay up without question. Diabetics get free eye exams but no help with spectacles! Unfortunately this time my eyesight had deteriorated so much in just 3 months that I too was left with no choice!
It is disgusting that they charge such exhorbitant fees that could be made for pennies!
