My older brother, he is 57 I am 53,just got a type 2 diabetes diagnosis last week with an A1c of 7.4.
My father was diagnosed as type 2 (no antibody test that I am aware of) at age 54. He was put on metformin, within a year or two he was insulin dependent. He is surviving pretty well for an 84 year old. His dad, our grandfather died suddenly in 1932 at about 52 years of age. He was a working class German immigrant.
I was diagnosed type 2 in Oct of 2011 until my doctor ordered the GAD antibody test that came back positive. I am type 1 LADA.
My brothers doctor did not order the GAD test but with my suggestion he was tested for GAD, he is waiting for the results. At his first follow up appointment with the doctor yesterday he was prescribed metformin (doctor is sure it is type 2) and because his cholesterol is high a statin. No BG meter or eye exam were ordered. He will see the ADA dietician tomorrow.
