I have had T1 for 54 years and been on a pump for 15. I have an A1C of 5.8. I generally do not believe basal testing is useful...never really worked for me. My CDE doesnt encourage it.
Heres the thing. You arent testing in a normal daily environment. I was to told to pick a section of the day. say breakfast to lunch, when my BG was OK. Not eat and test hourly. Never helped, as it was abnormal.
I did it for years, but realized it is better to lead a normal life and just test hourly on occasion for basal testing. You will have a much better understanding of how it works in real life.
Also, relax. Bernstein is great, but not the holy grail for all. The important thing for you to do is teach your child to live with diabetes, not be afraid of the ups and downs.
