First of all I would like to say that in my family we call my diabetes, "the beaties". It makes it a little bit more fun.
Anyhow, I've been sick the last two days, throwing up and the like, so all I want to do is sleep on the bathroom floor and post cute pictures of my dog sleeping all over me (he thinks he is being supportive, but really he is just making it harder for me when I have to run to the bathroom.)
For situations like these I typically have an action plan, as I'm sure many of you do as well. I thought I would post what I do when I am sick like this with no one around to take care of me.
First, I check my blood sugars. If they are below a 5 mmol/l (or 90), I begin sipping fruit juice and eating crackers, regardless of sick it will make me. We are diabetics, so we can handle a lot of nauseau, am I right? If they are higher, like a 10 mmol/l (180), I don't worry about it so much since I am super sensitive to hypoglycemia and will know if I need to eat/drink something.
Secondly, I start a text/phone tree of sorts. I call my mom, best friend, grandmother and let them know that I'm not feeling so well. This is so they know to check in on me regularly, and if they don't get a response to immediately call 911.
Thirdly, I check for DKA and monitor until I feel 100%. Even if my sugars are not above a 15, I still check whenever I am sick. (I really need one of those glucometres that do that for me! Peeing on a stick is not fun.)
Now, if I have crazy hypoglycemia and can't get my bg up, off to emerge I go. Better to have someone who knows what they are doing take care of me!
Well, that's all for today folks. Do you have any suggestions on what I can change in my sickness routine? Or what do you do differently?
