This poem is inspired by my summers at Camp Sweeney in Gainesville, Texas. It’s a diabetes camp with the goal of giving kids a break from managing their own diabetes. We didn’t have to figure out our insulin dosages or count our own carbs; everything was done for us. A tear gets caught in my throat whenever I think back to the camp dances and swims and campfires and competitions and casino nights and carnivals and sports and friends that I wish I would have kept in contact with. Sweeney was one of those places that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
