I woke up to this piece of news today. Very promising!

"Two teams of scientists have independently discovered a way to turn ordinary human skin cells into stem cells with the same characteristics as those derived from human embryos, a breakthrough that could open the door for advanced medical therapies."

I saw this headline earlier in the week. It will definitely be interesting to see what comes of this. From what I've heard some of the steps involved may be a bit risky (i.e. introducing a cancer gene), so I'm not holding my breath... but still, we can hope!

On the subject of stem cell ethics, there was an interesting discussion in my genetics class the other day... We were discussing ethics with regards to a newer procedure in which stem cells can be harvested from an embryo at the 8-cell stage without killing the embryo. This at first seems to be a more ethical way to obtain embryonic stem cells, but it is actually just causing even more debate - because the single stem cell removed is able to survive on its own, people are now claiming that constitutes "a life" and so it's unethical to obtain stem cells that way. Sheesh!

Double Sheesh!!!

Hoping for things to happen with the stem cells from skin, but I am not holding my breath. Not thinking there will be a cure in my lifetime.
