I am a Mac/iPhone application developer, and I was wondering if anyone has an interest to learn (or any skills) to develop an application for the iPhone and/or the Mac that might work with the current pumps and meters ... or, to develop something new.

I read a post from last Winter that it's a "risky" business to pursue such an "idealistic probability" since Diabetes only affects 7 in 1000 people; however, my son's Endocrinologist is all for it and is hoping that I will be able to do so.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but if anyone has an interest, PLEASE contact me with your level of interest and (hopefully) skills set. You can contact me here or through my profile (email, etc.).

A little about me:
B.S. Pharmacist (graduated 1990 from UT Austin)
Currently Provide Diabetes Education through my pharmacy staffing company
own a software development company (established 1992)
* since I can't find any "Mac" software, I'm just doing it myself !!!!!!!!

Thanks,

Thanks for the tip Gil DePaula.

I went back in and added that ability to suggest your own Blood Glucose level. That was a good idea. I need more constructive criticizm like that. really helps.

Free Insulin & Carbohydrate Calculator

Thanks again...
For ideas I would recommend our project www.glucosurfer.org ;-)
Hi Holger,
It's nice to see how your project is moving forward, since we last spoke. Thanks for sharing the link again. Keep us updated once in a while.
Gil
No problem. Try hosting it at a website that uses banners but doesn't have pop-ups. That will be more pleasing to users.

More suggestions:

1. You may want to ask if the person is going to exercise and provide 4 levels of input: 1-light, 2-medium, 3-high 4-extreme, or similar. You can then deduct 0.5 U x Level from the total, or an amount that you think is better. If they leave it blank or enter 0 then nothing gets subtracted.

2. You can also add an insulin on board (IOB) calculator, then subtract the IOB from the suggested bolus (or adding to the meal).
Parameters:
-Insulin action duration: 1 to 6 - (in hours) - typical
-Past bolus amount (in U) during the insulin duration period, and how long ago it was - (in hours)
Calculation:
- Proportionately decrease the IOB amount from the last bolus over the insulin action duration.
Example: Duration = 4 hours, Bolus of 5 units 2 hours ago, means IOB = 2.5 U

Good luck and have fun!
Those are ALL great suggestions Gil but you must remember that it is supposed to be a SIMPLE basic calculator. It's not so simple and easy to use if every time you use it you must input so much information. It was basically written so that I wouldn't have to stop and think to calculate insulin when the ratios are at "not so easy to calculate" numbers. I've found that when I have numbers like 32 or 13 I tend to round which makes the final result inaccurate. This was a way to keep that from happening. I will probably work on adding the suggestions you've mentioned just because I can't keep from doing it but I will not put those changes into this program.

Thank you again for your criticism. It really does help.

IT LOOKS AND WORKS GREAT ON THE IPHONE

Free Insulin & Carbohydrate Calculator

Sorry, Jared. The suggestions were for you. i posted it at the wrong location. :)

Yes, it makes it more complicated. You could split them into 2 calculators. One would be an IOB calculator, and the other would be a Bolus Calculator. The result from the IOB one could be entered as an input to the other, if the user wants to.

Cheers.
Another great idea Gil. I'll look into that also. I would also like to incorporate some kind of slider type interface for the glucose and carb values but that may be beyond my current set of skills. I've taught myself a lot already so nothing is impossible.

Thank you again.
It's been along time since I started this discussion, and I wanted to say that I'm incredibly impressed by what has been developed. I hate to admit that I bowed out of this forum quite some time ago, but it was because I became so frustrated with what I COULDN'T do. As I result, I put my work into other development projects, and I thought it was best to back away and see what someone could do.

PLEASE keep up the good work!
Hi Joe,
It's great that you started this discussion!
Thanks!

Jared,
If you want to keep on doing this and more:
Pancreum has 8 FREE iPhone/iPodTouch apps available at the AppStore. They are simple tools/calculators for Bolus, Basal rates, IOB, HbA1c, conversion between mmol/l and mg/dl, etc. Just go to the AppStore, search for PANCREUM and download them for FREE. You can use them as ideas to develop new web-based ones like this one you have.
Also, I just noticed a limitation with your calculator. It only suggests whole units of insulin (5 U, 7 U, etc). It should suggest a value with at least one decimal position (3.8 U, 2.3 U, etc).
I have seen the apps in the AppStore. That is how I first became aware of Pancreum and was surprised that I hadn't heard anything about it before. I can't wait to see what Pancreum can do.

The limitation was put in the original program that I'd written for myself because I have been on injections for 27 years and never saw a need for a fraction of a unit. I'm still not sure how insulin is measured and calculated while using a pump but I will be starting my OmniPod next week and will start to learn. I will add 1 or possibly 2 decimal places as I've seen 2 in some of the OmniPod training videos that I've watched.

Again, Gil, thank you and good luck with Pancreum. I can't wait to see it.
Cool!

The insulet OmniPod calculates a bolus in the same way we've been discussing. The only difference is that it only counts correction boluses in the IOB calculation. It does that because it considers that a carb bolus cancels out with the meal carbs, and therefore shouldn't be considered IOB.

Thanks for the best wishes.

Cheers,
Gil
