How many times do you use the same lancet?
I might change mine 8 times a year - and that is a big might---

hi Chucklin -

Enter "diabetes" and "bernstein" in your favorite search engine.

I went home from the pediatric ward with about 2 pounds of diabetes pamphlet and product information. I was very confused when I was diagnosed. ("You're still pretty confused", some smart alec said while chucklin).
Chuck,
I guess I'll be the one to tell you that I was told years ago to wash my hands with Dial soap dry them off then prick your finger. You don't have to use alcohol. Sorry! I was told (by a Dr no less) that Dial soap would sterlize your skin as well as alcohol. That's what I've done for like 20 years now. As far as changing my lancet I do that when it starts to hurt maybe about 6 times a year. I was told and tell my daughter your the only one using it if someone else uses it then change it but you don't have to change it if you know your the only one using it b/c it's your blood and all. You know what you have.
I hardley ever used alcohol swabs when on shots. Now, with the pump, I used one when changing my site, but that's it. And then if my fingers are dirty and I need to test and can't wash. i.e. I've been working in the barn or something.
And I hardly ever change my lancet. I try to remember to do it about once a month, but I usually don't remember.
I use alcohol when i put in my site for the pump. But that is all. When I was first dignosed I was just like you but not any more.
Now that I went back to using my Multiclix, it will be about 3 years before I change. This multiclix has 6 lancets, so 1 every 6 months if I'm reminded. Let's see, I just turned 58...next change=2012.
I think we need a "remind me to change my lancet" sticky thread here, cuz that 6 month change could end up at 12 months easy. I have more important things to do than change my lancet. :)
My test strip supplier sent me (unordered! SIX boxes of multiclix lancet barrels with 102 lancets in each box. I'll NEVER use them all up. I still have lancets from my first meter 19 years ago. What a waste of insurance money, not to mention my own!
Lol, you really don't need to use an alcohol swab. I haven't used one for 10 years and haven't had a problem with it. Sometimes i get REALLY high BG readings, so i clean my finger off and retest, but that's pretty rare.

With an injection it's so little and so quick that it can't really hurt you. Now a pump is a different story. It's best to sanitize that as much as possible.
I test 8x per day. That makes about 240 tests per month. I maybe change it every 3-4 months.................do the math and ...........gasp.
For many years I couldn't tell you... like a lot of you it was maybe an annual thing.
But a couple years ago I got into the habbit of changing with each new via of stips (25).
I think's its been a little more comfortable since starting that.
I was told to change every time and at first I did that, but I was running out of lancets- my lancet prescription said test twice a day, my strips got re-written for 6 times a day. What was really silly was that the cost of the lancets was less than the $15 I pay for my prescriptions, but they still wouldn't let me buy them until a certain time had passed. So when I saw that you didn't need to change every time, that was a relief. I've been changing daily since my fingers are a little sensitive and I find they hurt more after the first few times.
you have to have a prescription for lancets? here, i just call up johnson and johnson to order some and they'll deliver it to my house with no delivery charges. anyway i change my lancets every couple of days. i used to do the very sterile thing and change it everytime. but since i spend so much on test strips, being obsessed with my sugars, not changing the lancet's helping me to save a little. anyway i wash my hands with water and soap or wipe them with antiseptic wipes before i test. so...maybe that makes it a little more hygenic.
I was told alcohol swabs are hard on diabetics because it kills all the good bacteria with the bad stuff. A good handwashing prior to testing would be easier on hands. As for lancets, my husband never changes his.... I try to change my son's once a day as his fingers are sensitive and there is not so many places to prick since his fingers are soo small.
