Tonight on CBS news it had a new study finding... If you are in the "grey" area (pre-diabetic)and if you don't diet and excersise, it is your fault if you develop type 2 diabetes.. Study shows that 60 percent of the people in the "grey" area will go on to develop diabetes if they don't diet and excersise. Now what do you think about that?
Your own fault if you are diabetic? I am 200 pounds at 5 foot 9 inches.. a far cry from being obese..I did diet and excercise after not being able to hardly see for a few months untill I went on pills and eventually insulin, but it's my fault that my pancreas has sh*t the bed or my cells have become a bit more resistant to insulin?
Well isn't that special!
So what about when the insurance companies decide.. well you know, you brought this disease on yourself.. you did not follow the proper guidlines when you were in the "grey" area... YOU ARE NO LONGER COVERED!
Far fetched?
HMMMMMM You get into a car accident guess what happens.. Your rates go way up or they DROP you..
What a dangerous finding!! My fault?
B*******!!
Any comments?

One must remember that the progression of T2 is often hidden and it is important to understand that a common characteristic of T2 is high insulin levels. These high insulin levels can cause people to gain bodyfat (just as it can with T1). Obesity seems to be highly associated with T2. But is it a "cause" of T2? One must remember that T2 is only diagnosed when 80% of beta cell function is gone and you have usually had diabetes for quite some time.

So in your case, it is just as likely (actually more likely) that Jonny gets T2 because of genetics (independent of what he eats), he puts on weight and eventually is diagnosed as T2. Genetics plays a role, some unknown environmental factors play a role, but his poor eating habits are actually not relevant.

i thought high blood glucose was common to t2 and sometimes insulin resistance? Does high insulin levels cause higher levels of bodyfat? What about the type 1's who are injecting bucketloads to maintain bs control, yet dont gain any weight?
Are you stating that diet/obesity has no connection to type 2?

What's your definition of bucketloads?

A common symptom of T2 is insulin resistance. Early in the T2 progression you will often produce high levels of insulin to overcome this increased resistance. This leads to preferential bodyfat gain and weight increase. At some point, the beta cells start to fail and the insulin production is no longer able to keep up with the level needed to overcome insulin resistance and maintain blood sugar levels. It is at this point that people get diagnosed.

I am stating my belief that obesity (the diet thing is more complex) has no proven "causal" connection to diabetes. There is an association, but I believe that it is more likely that diabetes "causes" obesity. And while you may be nice and lean right now, you are young. Lots of T1s have to worry about how insulin can result in weight (and bodyfat) gains.

Diabetes is not a "fat" persons disease everytime.
Genetics can play a big roll.

Good one, Punkin!

I believe that it is a major misconception and off target that obesity causes
diabetes.

For those folks who store glucose to fat more efficiently they may appear heavier in weight. Did that cause the diabetes - nope.

The issue still comes back to energy balance in body and what the body is doing processing the glucose.

I believe that heavier weight or thin; the issue is how much excess glucose remains in any one case still rattling around the blood system and that body cannot/does not remove and that is what causes the rotting out of the veins/arteries. Obesity is a edge case that has diabetes research lost in space on wrong edge case orbiting wrong planet.

eating 'to the way the govt. tells you' is still not an excuse to be overweight though. High carbs doesnt mean you put on weight. Only if you eat too much and thats the key. You can have a diet of 70% carbs and not gain anything.

Also, from what you see she eats much better than you do, but do you really know what she eats all day every day? Is it possible she eats either more than she should or maybe indulges too often? The fact she is obese should give youa clue there. My parents are both obese. Im around 8-9% body fat as a triathlete. I dont have to follow a path.

also 'people with t2 tend to be hungry' is such a broad statement. Im a type 1 and get hungry. Do t2 folk get more hungry? I highly doubt it.

So we will have to agree to disagree. SOME people dont choose to be obese or large, BUT dont do anything about it either.

High carbs doesn't mean you gain weight if you're a triathlete (which I very much admire, by the way! :-) ). But if you're fairly sedentary, then all those calories go into the fat bucket, not the energy bucket. And I think the majority of people are pretty sedentary -- it takes willpower to fit in strenuous exercise when you're working a desk job and have kids to take care of on top of it (but AR does a good job of it! :-) ).

About the hunger -- do you remember how hungry you were before you were diagnosed? Did you do like I did, and eat until your stomach hurt and STILL felt hungry? Taking insulin solved the problem for me, but for T2s who are encouraged to do it with diet and exercise, still have a problem with the insulin getting into their cells and/or working properly, and so their cells are still generating whatever hormone it is that tells them they're hungry. In fact, some of the newer T2 oral meds are aimed at inhibiting the gut hormones that stimulate the brain to feel hungry.

And as far as my friend, whom I've known for 20 years, I really don't think she's bingeing or overeating in secret. We have a very honest relationship, and I stayed with her for about 2 weeks many years ago, and she's surrounded by family and also works very hard as a CDE, and now a researcher into creating universally accessible diabetes equipment and computer programs for the disabled. The fact is that I'M the one who got myself in trouble (almost died) with bingeing. Gained about 10 lb. doing that, but now that I'm limiting carbs, I've lost 30 lb. and my weight is solidly inside normal BMI (but I'm sure I have a higher fat content than you do!! :-) ) And I'm not hungry, because I'm eating more protein.

The point that I'm trying to make is actually something you agreed with: yes, people get fat from eating too much, but the kind of foods they eat and what causes their hunger are important factors too. There is so little known about the overlapping factors (but not identical) that cause T2 and obesity that it is important not to jump to conclusions any too soon.

And meanwhile, make sure that your parents periodically get tested for T2. They ARE at risk, but maybe they'll be lucky and not have the genes for it, in which case they can get as fat as they want and will never develop it.

People who gain excess weight can blame it on hormones, usually insulin but also thyroid, estrogen, and theoretically all hormones. The theory does work for obese people.

Insulin resistence is a very poorly understood concept, and some say it can vary between tissue type. Age also seems to play a role.

The skinny t1 diabetic who eats bucket loads of acrbs and shoots as much insulin as they need, sometimes extreme amounts, can be very skinny. Feel fortunate your fat cells don't respond to insulin like mine do. But are you immune from heart disease and complications from all that sugar? The best evidence points to sugars as the real heart killer, not fats and cholesterol consumption.

im only eating 160-200gms of carbs a day....def not a sugar junkie :)

Well, in comparison, I'm eating around 60g of carbs a day. So what you're eating is a lot more than me, but you're more physically active than I am, so you NEED the carbs for energy. Amount of carbs needs to be different for each person, because everyone's activity level is different.

it also pass down diabetes 2 my hole family has it from auntys ,uncles , their kids and their kids on both ma and da side my sister 17 year old we got both 1 ,2 my gran die in 2005 with it and i had it a year befor any thing was see by doctor and i kept tell him some thing was not right, thyroid, was underactive my blood pressure was though the floor now on tables and victoza , my sugar are great now normal for the first time since i got it
