Medical breakthroughs are frequently made by groups that are not focused on profit. Indeed, groups like these are doing research into curing diabetes.

The communty appears devided between the optimists and the pessimists. In the last three years I have read everything I could get my hands on concerning a cure, too much to go into detail here but I have been encouraged with what I have read, particularly in the last year. I suppose that puts me in the Optimists camp and a vote of "Yes" to a cure in my lifetime.
For those that are pessimistic about the prospects of a cure, I would suggest that 'past disappointments should not discourage future hope', and by way of encouragement may a Brit be so bold as to quote a few past US Presidents and others:
“Pessimism never won any battle.” Dwight David Eisenhower (American 34th President).
“A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties” Harry S Truman (American 33rd President).
“Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power” William James (American Philosopher and Psychologist)
“Pessimism is an excuse for not trying and a guarantee to a personal failure.” Bill Clinton (American 42nd US President).
“Optimism doesn't wait on facts. It deals with prospects. Pessimism is a waste of time.” Norman Cousins (American Essayist and Editor).

Cure?

Hmmm possibly for type 1. We are no longer looking all that profitable. Type 2 is where the big money is now at so curing type one is not going to be a big dent to the big pharma folks.

Back in the day the researchers thought that simple tissue replacement therapy would be effective....

It never was, it always came at a high cost ( anti rejection drugs ) and it didnt work that well.

Since the mid 90's folks have been making real headway on fixing the immune system and getting regeneration to happen.

Still its a long way off, a lot further out than smart insulin..

So what I see is smart insulin becoming the next big thing, then eventually being replaced by a cure for some eligible percentage.

Finally a vaccine against getting type 1

Then we become nearly extinct leaving only the type 2's getting pwned by the big pharma companies.

whoa, I just got done reading on INGAP peptide.. That + Faustmans work could very well = cure.

we really need the research folks to do a better job of working together, and getting research money to the folks getting results.

Ivan!

The cure for type 1 is a transplant, which I had in June, 2008. I am cured and have never felt this good after 6 years of hell with type 1. I am a pharmaceutical sales rep and used to sell Glucophage. I am offended that you believe big pharma doesn't want a cure for type 2. That's ridiculous. Without Glucophage many type 2's would be in horrible shape. This is a life saver. Believe me, a cure for type 2 will make someone some money. I have no idea how far away we are for a type 2 cure but don't forget pancreatic transplant is the one and only cure for type 1 now and were it not for this surgery I would have died again and probably be six foot under. God has blessed me in a tremendous way giving me my new pancreas. But big pharma is no the enemy here!

No.

I remember when I was very young the ADA and selling x-mas cards for a cure in the 70's when it was started by a bunch of parets that had new diabetic kids. It was small and good then, ow it is a bunch of money grubbing social spending rich ass's.

There is most likely a cure already, but it is more oeny to develop treatments to make others live longer to keep the money folwoing. This is not a disease that they want ot cure, they want to treat it, because of money.

Unless there is ahuge overthrow of government and change in socal structure, a world wide insodent whre there needs to not be any more power, there will not be a cure, only more elaborae treatments.

Had this crap all my life and it is now taking my life. 40 years and I expect no cure in sight for many lofetimes. So untill we stop being controled, there will be no cue. Sorry guys, I have been looking at this for too long.

I wish you well

Robert

I am a firm believer in that the "cure" can be found through careful diet and exercise. Some would argue that this scenario is not a cure...but I disagree. When we look at diseases and their "cures" ...what purpose does the cure serve? It allows the person to enjoy the life without complications, issues, and (as much as possible) further medications. This also allows the person to move forward with life.

I changed my diet...I now exercise (a lit bit, which is more than I did before) and my numbers are all under control. I no longer take any medicines as they cause me to have BG numbers that are too low.

I am happy!

But how many of us are willing to make those lifestyle changes? I think too many of us, myself included (at one time) are too content with popping some metformin and sticking ourselves with a nearby needle. No don't get me wrong, I MEAN NO DISRESPECT....as I am sure that there are PLENTY that would LOVE be off meds. But again my question remains, how many of us are willing to sincerely make some lifestyle changes?

Say what one will about the Dr. Barnard and the whole Vegan movement...but I can testify...it has worked for me. Even my doctors are believers now.

Diet and exercise is great for all diabetics and for many type 2 diabetics they can reverse it to the point of getting off meds but not all and for us that are dealing with T1 orT1.5 it's not going to happen. There is no going back for us.

I glad you are doing so well with it.

Dear Joe.

What I find amazing that some 1 and 1.5 have nearly normal pancreas output and some type 2 has little or no insulin production. Not clear cut which type's pancreas still works somewhat. I was trying to ask people to report insulin on a units/ Kg-day an average was about 0.4 IU/ kg-day but some type 1 use a lot less and there are horredous insulin needs in some type 2 that probably have a non working pancreas and insulin resistance. I wonder if it would be more helpful to classify diabetics on insulin production and resistance or on daily insulin needs.
