HI everyone.
So for those of us that consume alcohol. (of legal age of course)What do you consume and your choice of. Give me some input. I know none is best but, on occasion I mean. I end up having a couple of Light beers,or a couple Capt & Coke every couple weeks. Not much happens with my levels though my BG's don't go over like 150 which is a little high but only when I've had few extra.

Well I'm a junior in college and have been diabetic less than a year, so I definitely got my fair share of crazy drinking done before. That being said, I'll still go out and party and get pretty drunk, but I'm very responsible. It helps that I've never been the type to black out or anything crazy, and it also helps that I'm not the type to get really confused if I get too low. But I've never gone low while drinking anyways, only high. I drink fruity drinks, mostly Sex on the Beach, Rum Runners, Mai Tai's etc. And if my BG starts to climb too high, I take a shot... either insulin or alcohol, whichever I feel like! But for the most part, I've gotten really good at balancing my alcohol vs. carb intake, so it's not really a problem. And my A1C is 5.5, so I must be doing something right!
I have found having a light beer (Sam Adams Light) has little or no effect on my blood sugar, regular beers and micro brews tend elevate BS.
I go w/ a red wine almost every night it helps w/ my dawn phenom. I drink beer on occassion but the carbs are usually a problem
I stick with Mchelob Ultra, test frequently, and never consume over 3 beers during a 5 hour stretch. I usually need to inject a small dosage after 2 hours (as I'm type 1), but I haven't seen anything drastic happen to my BG while drinking. And it's always a rare occurance.
I stick with the "girly" drinks (Mike's Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff, etc). When I limit it it to just a couple with dinner, I have little to no complications.

However, a couple weekends ago, I tried orange juice and vodka. It did just what I thought it would.....sudden highs, then highs later on.... I really enjoyed it, but I don't think I can do that again unless someone else has advice on that one.
Red wine is great for me, actually any wines..just watch the calories. Some light beers are fine and I notice no change in sugar levels, actually a nice wine brings it down. My A1C is around 5.4...just keep an eye on it and drink in moderation.
I drink once or twice a month. When I do I try to stick with clear liquors, but I seem to always get dragged into some tequila shots and the occasional beer as well. I use to be a bouncer at the club I frequent, so there are some 'expectations' when I show up. They know I'm diabetic so they're cool with me not participating, but I'm not always alright with it. I check my BG all the time while I'm out there, and it's great fun for them. We (bartenders, bouncers, and owner) use to play games with a Breathalyzer, so about the only comment I get is, "When is it my turn?" I also don't get to worried since the owner's girlfriend is a MD and is usually there.
A couple of years ago, I had a couple of Vodka cranberries around dinner time. The next morning I woke up to the paramedics. I find that alcohol lowers my BG about 5-8 hours post drinking and have decided that on the rare (now) occasion that I will drink it is before 3pm.

Now, Mimosas on the rare Sunday morning or a beer with lunch on occasion is all I afford myself.
I've been mostly limiting myself to wines, 'cuz they're relatively low carb. I estimate carbs for alcohol like any other food: beer=12g, wine =5g, ciders have a label w/ carb count (usu. around 20g) unlike other alcohol. Light Mike's hard lemonade at 4g/bottle is a favorite but hard to find in stores. (BevMo has it.) The pharm warnings say alcohol can strengthen your insulin, but so far I've found just the opposite: the insulin strengthens the alcohol. I get twice as much buzz from wine now that I'm on insulin--have to be a little more careful with alcohol that way. :) I miss Sex on the Beach, but I'm guessing anything with grenadine is very high carb so I gave up all my favorite fruity drinks. Looking forward to trying bajabob.com as mentioned by an earlier post.
Red wine is always best. And only one serving, as it can drastically lower blood sugars. See, the liver will completely stop processing carbs in order to deal with the toxin (i.e., the alcohol), and will not resume processing carbs until it has completely gotten the alcohol out of the system.
Yeah, I like to drink in moderation, and I love to go out and have fun! A few times a month I let off steam and go dancing, and 2-3 drinks don't affect my BS.

There are many light beers to choose from in stores here in NYC -- I love Presidente Light (8carbs) the best, followed by Corona Light, Amstel Light, and Heneiken Light (both 8 carbs per bottle, too). Clear Lagers and Pilsner beers have the lowest carbs, while cloudy beers like Blue Moon (Hefeweisens) and Sierra Nevada (Pale Ales) have around 25 carbs per bottle - too high for me.... I don't even like the taste anymore.

Dry Red or White wine are great, and I also love to make my own Sangria for dinners and parties at home. I cut up a little bit of fruit (like half an apple and half a pear and a few slices of orange and lemon) into really small chunks, and soak that a few hours ahead in some rum ( just enough to cover the fruit). Then fill up the pitcher with a bottle of wine (white or red, but into the white ones lately as no risk of a spilling disaster!) and add a 2 liter bottle of diet ginger ale -- YUM!!!

Every once in a blue moon, I like a cocktail. Dirty martinis are sugar free! Or, I'll have a vodka/tequilla/makers with Seltzer and squeeze of lime. No blood sugar elevations with mixing with Seltzer! And it's pretty refreshing.
