Lately I have been trying to gage my insulin doses for my bolus injections. I have basically gotten my basil injections at 60 units of Levemir in the AM and 60 units in the PM. With a lot of extra testing, I have figured my insulin to carb ratio to be 1:5 gm Carbs. My wife has gotten concerned because I am not following the GP's instructions of a strict 15 units of Novolog with each meal period which was not doing a single thing for my sugars. He also had me on 50 units of Levemir in AM and 40 units of Levemir in the PM. Since I have started doing bolus injections before eating food, doing my best to gage my amount of carbs and using a lil more of the Levemir I have started seeing a downward trend of my sugars nothing drametic but getting alot closer to normal range. How can I help calm my wife down until I can get into my first appointment with the new Endo in November? Her concern is I am taking way too much insulin, she sees 120 units of Levemir and 125 units spread out over today of Novolog to be way too much. Personally today has been a very carb heavy day. Sad to say was about 480 grams of carbs :( We go every Sunday to church to eat and they were serving nothing but carbs, rice bread, pasta salad. Nothing remotely healthy and then my wifes best friend got pizza and there went a possibly healthy day of good food :( My wife refuses to eat vegetables and I have a hard time eating them because she makes me cook them and I am not a good cook :(

Gerri said cottage cheese isn't low carb. But...I've found that, for an afternoon snack (and this will only work for those of us that like cottage cheese of course), a raw cut-up veg like half a cuke or a tomato mixed into a little cottage cheese (I'm talking about 2 or 3 tbs) doesn't affect my sugars at all. Another fun thing about trying to eat lower carbs is that one of my faves, mixed nuts, is my second afternoon snack, but it's only good for you if you only eat 1/4c. I measure mine and slowly enjoy each nut.
Okay ....I think that perhaps some folks have mis-interpreted my strong urging for Derek to look into what Dr. Bernstein is teaching as a means for adding comments about the 'expensive' cost of 'diabetic food' ....etc. ....etc. ....etc...

I will now 'cut to the chase' with concrete laboratory evidence from myself that pretty much validates ALL of Dr. Bernstein's methods !

Just to bring these hbA1c numbers a bit more 'in-focus" ....people who are NOT diabetic have a hbA1c of 4.2 to 4.6 ....does this mean I am 'cured' of diabetes ....don't bet your life on it ! -( I won't ). It DOES mean that I have likely GREATLY REDUCED, ( possibly eliminated ) the likelihood of my developing 'complications' of diabetes ....here's the SHORT list of the 'complications'.... BLINDNESS, KIDNEY FAILURE, LIMB AMPUTATION, on and on and on !

The above is meant in absolutely no way as a performance of chest-thumping bragadocio .... rather, it beautifully illustrates the life-altering (for me) experience that I have fortunately been able to receive as a result of following the methods of a TRUE MASTER of the diabetic condition ....the venerable Dr. Richard K. Bernstein ....

NONE of the above would have been remotely possible by following my personal physicians advice ( she means well, but she does not 'have the time' in her busy practice to fully explore really effective diabetes management )

NONE of the above would have been remotely possible by following my local hospitals ( or any other for that matter ) 'diabetes educator'.

Congratulations, Tim! Awesome A1c readings. Agree with everything you said about Dr. B. Reading his book changed my life. Can't say my A1c's are anywhere near yours due to serious morning phenomenon, but my goal is to be in the 4's.
I have that book on my next purchase list, I plan to get it with my first check from my new job, in which I started today.. brought my meter with me and my sugars were 150 before eating lunch and 170 few hours after so I am making progress :) I just hope my doctor doesn't blow a fuse when he finds out I have been doing a insulin to carb ratio dosage with my insulin. But again I see the endo in November so hopefully i will get better care then. Both doctors are middle eastern which is pretty good according to my mom, they are strict but wise when it comes to medicine. I am getting the book week from saturday i hope :)
Firstly, apologies for my noobishness. Secondly, have you looked into a low GI diet? It's good for diabetes AND good for ADHD, so it might be worthwhile for you. I love carbs, so the thought of eating low carb is not a happy one for me (although I realise it's probably one I will have to look into in the future)!
its ok, what is a low GI diet? never heard of it :)
never thought about that, but it also is a meal and food pantry for those who need assistance with food, so you aren't supposed to bring any outside food because you are in need of assistance. I have started trying to take a smaller portion and sharing it with my wife. Has helped so far :)
