TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

A lot of the diagnosis stories I read from the T1 report levels at diagnosis well above "nondiabetic norms" -- often, it's the person's first brush with DKA. Some of my RL T2 friends have been diagnosed at blood glucose levels over 300-400, with A1c over 10, and the typical "syndrome" (hunger, thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss). This contrasts to my own diagnosis at 170 mg/dl fasting, 7.8A1c... which almost seems low/"normal" by comparison.

What was your blood glucose level, and A1c, at diagnosis?

I was diagnosed August 2007. Blood glucose 399 and A1c of 8.5. That's the reason why I was wheeled in directly to the emergency room. I have all the classic symptoms too...which I ignored for some time (stupid me). Learned my lesson the hard way.

I had all the symptoms which I had been studiously ignoring on the principle that if I didn't look it would go away. Well it didn't and I got to a blood sugar of 558, HbA1c of 15.2, and enough ketones to fell an ox before getting frogmarched off to hospital still protesting that this wasn't really necessary...

My son's BG at diagnosis was 574 and his A1C was 9.7.

My A1c was 17.1%
I don't know what my BG was, but it was well over 800.
I don't know how I even survived.

I was dx with a BG of 265 and I thought my A1C was 8.2, but now I'm wondering. I do know I dropped 40 lbs in 6 months with no effort. I need to double check my A1C, you have me wondering!

I was 1100 at diagnosis--had no idea what was going on and just thought I had the stomach flu. Maybe one type 2 diabetic in my family history but that was it.

It sounds like your diabetes hadn't progressed to the point where it would present symptoms. That's a good thing! My numbers were very low when it was caught as well, because mine was found when I was pregnant. Had I not had my son I would've lived with it for years.
