I just want to know who here is like me and is the first and only known Type 1 in your entire family.

I'm talking you have no known diabetic parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, cousins, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, ancestors, or family pets.

OK maybe pets.

You get the idea...so who else is a complete freak of nature?

Many T2s in the family, but I'm the first T1 as far as we know. Diagnosed eight months ago at the age of 46. I've tried to do all I can to avoid the cardiovascular disease that plagues both sides of my family (exercise regularly, never overweight, don't drink, never smoked). Didn't see this bullet coming!

It was worse for me. I worked hard to lose the 100lb I gained from undiagnosed hypothyroidism only to be diagnosed T1 at 37 - and then 2 months later, finding out I was an insulin-resistant T1, so basically I not only didn't avoid the T2, but I got double diabetes. Crap.

I am!!!! no one knew about type 1 diabetes till lucky me got diagnosed
!!!!!! That will be 7 years ago July 3rd.

I am the only type 1 diabetic in my entire family tree which dates back a long way since I am from England originally. You're not a freak of nature at all. Since diabetes is an autoimmune disease it can and does strike after a virus or after another immune compromising event. I was diagnosed about 3 months after a virus had my temp up near 107 that pretty much wiped out my islet cells. But on the positive side, I have found after 37 years that non-familial diabetes is somewhat easier to deal with and if you take really good care of yourself you can avoid the vast majority of complications.

Hi: I am from England/Scotland also. I was diagnosed at age 3 while living in the "colonial" tropics of Kenya, Nairobi. No one had any idea what was wrong with me. Also I had had various vaccines - polio, yellow fever, smallpox, typhoid. We had no vaccines for measles, mumps, whooping cough, chickenpox. I had all of these virus' when I was young. I am now 61 years old and with no major complications!! 58 years with type 1 ! No one else in my family has type 1 or 2....? how is that ??? I sure am a "freak of nature".

Wow I am really surprised with your experience !! I´m really glad to know you are so healthy after all this years. I really hope to be as healthy as you are. I got diagnosed about 10 months ago, I´m 20 and new in this, I still scared sometimes

Yep that is me too!! I was diagnosed 27 years ago......only one in my family with D1 or type 2 for that matter....Plus I am thought of as the 'black sheep' in my family as well. My family don't know much about type1 and never really bothered to find out. Maybe because I live so far away from them. One exception is my daughter, she gets it, but then she has had to grow up with a Mum who is T1.

haha.... My Mom called to tell me I am not the only chosen one in my family to have diabetes. Looks like Elvis has it too. He is now on insulin. Oops.... did I forget to mention he's their dog :)

Now that is true Family, Your answer just made my day.

lol...made mine to :)

I'm the only one in my family.

I too am a "freak of nature!" No history at all, it just appeared on day!

If anyone feels like reading a new blog I've started up on my experiences feel free to take a gander!
