I'm also the first in my family, and extended family as far back as our records go. Not a single other person on either side has type 1 for a generation.

I am the only one in my family. T1 since 1977. When I was a kid it made me so mad.

I am also one of the "freaks of Nature" as you put it but the doctors seem to think that the explanation is that I contacted a virus that the destroyed the islet cells.
No one knows this disease even after all of these years.

Yep, that's me. My grandfather had type 2, but no one on either side as far back as we can trace had type 1. Weird huh?

My husband is the only one is his family as far back as they can go that is T1. He was diagnosed when he was 6 and I think that his parents were told that there was some time of virus that attacked the cells or something. He doesn't like to talk about it and still after 30 years he would like to keep it as secret and let as few people know as possible. His parents and then after we met we were told that because he was the only one that he couldn't pass it on and low and behold, our son is six and was diagnosed May 31st. My husband sees it as his fault and there is no chance for us to ever have anymore kids. Anyway, guess it started to turn into a vent, but wanted to share that my husband was a "freak of nature" but we just don't talk about it...

Sorry to hear he's refusing to have more kids.

Last I checked, and this is maybe 20 years ago, I think the odds were like 1 in 4 that a Type 1 will produce T 1 offspring. I think this was if only one parent had the genes. If two, surprisingly, (again, as I recall) the odds were only 1 in 2.

Anyhoo, the point is that current odds are probably out there on the interwebs. Maybe it will help if you find and share them with him..

I may have said somewhere in all this that I was the only one but I recently learned of a second or third cousin who was recently DX'ed.

First, only, and 20 year later, still the only! Not even any known 2s in my family, extended out on either side.

All the cousins on my dad's side have wild allergies- milk, eggs, wheat, beef, pork, shellfish.... And the women on my mom's side are crazy (literally, grandma spent a few years in a mental institution) so my hope is that I got diabetes in place of the standard family gene dysfunctions.

That's me ... And to make things worse, I am living in a country where almost nobody has type 1. The doctors saw I had diabetes and automatically gave me pills. After one and a half years they have finally admitted that I am type 1.

I was the first type 1 in my family, and the second in my town. My mom was diagnosed with what what is probably NLADA when I was a teenager.
