After reading Karen's post she mentioned that she uses 12 basal rates. I currently use 3 basal rates. My Medtronic training nurse said the average is somewhere around 5. Where is everyone else at and why?

I currently use 7 basal rates. It's amazing how my insulin needs vary at different times of the day.
I am at 5 currently, but still adjusting, so it could go up or down. What I really need to do is to figure out my rates for that certain time of a month, otherwise it's hypoglycemia city, baby.
Hmmmm.... you guys are making me feel guilty for not having done any basal checks in a long time. My rates are pretty basic:

Regular profile (2 rates)...0.5 units except for 3am to 5am = 0.6 units

Temp rate for cardio exercise = 50% of regular profle for two hours (one hour prior and during exercise)

Temp rate for weight lifting = 75% of regular profile for one hour
Man, I'm a bit of a heavy hitter with the daily insulin dosages! Here are my rates:

12am - 8:00am: 1.75U
8am - 5pm: 1.00U
5pm-12am: 1.5U

That's a whopping 33.5U/day for me! I'm a bit larger than average, 6'2" 200lbs, but I feel like I'm sucking up more juice than most people here for whatever reason!
Tim,

I am 5'11" and use a ton of insulin as well. I have put on a lot of weight in the last two years so my requirements went up, also I think I have become a bit insulin resistant with my 41 years of diabetes.

12A-2A .6
2A-4 .8
4-5 1.5
5-7 2.00 ( my adjustment for my highs of over 200 at 7:00a.m. and still not working)
7-8A .7
8-10A .8
10-11A .6
11-12:30 .8
12:30-2P .4
2-4P .5
5-7 P 1.50
7-12 1.00

Carb ratio 1:5

Any basal suggestions to fix that 7:00 a.m. spike
Well I changed it again last night to 4:00-7:00 A /2.00U and was 139 at 7:00 a.m., my two hour after breakfast, woohoo, but then by 10:00A I was 89, so now I have to figure that out.

I hate changing basals something I seldom do, but I am getting closer. :)
Mine are currently:

12A-2A - 0.75
2A-9A - 1.00
9A-6P - 0.85
6P-10P - 0.90
10P-12A - 0.75

During exercise I do a temporary basal rate of 50-75% for the duration, or take my pump off completely, followed by a 90-95% basal rate for eight hours afterwards if it's heavy exercise.
Right now I'm only using 1 and have been for 20 years but it seems like after these problems I've been having the last few weeks that will probably change!!!
Wow, I'm a heavy insulin user as well... I am 6 weeks pregnant, but even before that I was using about 30 units a day in basal rates.
My current basal patterns:

12AM - 1.4
6AM - 1.5
10AM - 1.3
6PM - 1.4

When I work out I take my pump off because I tend to go low very quickly. That, and it's hard to have on me when I'm working out... I can't believe people can regulate off a .5 or less basal rate!
I have 6 basal rates. And my total amount of insulin is around 135-150units
