Yesterday, Sept 15, was my 67'th diaversary. Still no complications except for mild nerve damage. I hope the research being done on long term T1D's in Boston will explain why some of us are so lucky to have lived so long, and be so healthy.

The research in Boston is attempting to find why us long term, healthy type 1 diabetics have been so successful. I participated in that research in 2009. The research is ongoing, and began in 2005. There have been almost 800 participants thus far. They have found several interesting things so far. Some of us still have small amounts of insulin production, after all these years. There is also some mysterious inner protection that we possess that protects us against eye and kidney damage, and other nerve based damage. It was found that that protection does not help our hearts, many participant have had heart attacks, bypasses, etc. I attended a meeting of approximately 100 participants in June, 2011, at Joslin. None of us looked at all overweight. That is a definite plus.

Working on it every day now Richard. Am considering a CGM the new Dexcom 4th Generation one looks like it might be worthwhile. I am not yet interested in getting a pump, for me the flexibility of MDI makes life with D easier. And I enjoy scuba diving so I would not be able to do that with a pump. But I am interested in catching trends before they become hypos or hypers. So the CGM makes a lot of sense at the moment.

I hope the Dex 4G will be good for you, Clare. I would like to have one too, but Medicare does not cove CGMs.

I just ordered mine yesterday, the Dexcom sales rep doesn't see any issues with insurance so it won't be more than a few weeks before I can start using it. I too hope it will be a good thing. I have been a little behind the times so far so I am attempting to catch up. One small piece of technology at a time. I am also getting a new Insulinx blood glucometer, but not the one being sold in the US which is a neutered version of the European one. A friend is shipping me one from the UK with all the bells and whistles that Abbott didn't even attempt to get past the FDA here. The UK version is a meter that acts very much like a pump as far as calculating boluses and IOB. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.

Thanks Danny!!

congratulations on being here!!

it's nice to say Happy anniversary to a fellow diabetic..

Hi Ame, these diabetes websites are very good for learning and sharing! I think about 80% of what I know about diabetes was learned on the web.

Belated congratulations Richard! Sorry I have not been online very much, but enjoy seeing you when I am. Be well and continue to stay active! You are an inspiration for me and may others! Your friend, Drew

Drew, it is so nice to see you here. I hope you and your family are well! We are good here in Kingston, NY.
