I recently went to a cardiologist for screening due to relatives having cardiomyopathy and due to palpitations- everything is fine with my heart. He wants me to take an ace inhibitor to prevent kidney damage and gave me two studies to read that back up that it will prevent this. Is anyone else doing this? I'm not sure what to do. I have no sign of kidney damage at this point. I plan to ask my endo about it in March.

What do you all think?

I think I will monitor my bp for a bit and see how it goes...

I use toprol XL not an ace inhibitor for BP and 84 MG Asprin. The cardiologist put me on the toprol XL shortly before the open heart surgery and no, I did not have a blockage. The open surgery was to correct a genetic abnormality on the left side of my heart.

thanks Rick, I will look xl up as another possibility.

Are your blood sugars high? If they're pretty much normal then maybe your risk of kidney disease is also negligible and you may not need 'to prevent kidney disease'. A differnet angle from me.

super sally, no my bg is not high overall, but I still am having a lot of fluctuation at times... my last a1c was 5.1. I will have another soon. I seem to go up dramatically at times when I have eaten nothing or only had a cup of tea. Last night I went from 99 to 147 in 2-3 hours from 11-1 am or so- all I had was chamomile tea, raw stevia extract and heavy cream- that's it. crazy. The highest I have been since August, as far as I know, was 170 2 weeks ago- again I went to sleep at 3 am in the 90's and woke up at 5 am at 170 with no explanation- I had not eaten anything for a few hours and I drank some water that was it. I took my 2 units of basal, I usually take it then, and one unit novolog, woke up an hour later and took another, it hadn't budged- and then an hour later after another unit novolog it had gone to 107 or so....

Anyway, no I would not say they are high overall, I am very sensitive to stress though and tend to go up or down rapidly from that.

I'm going to wait and see what my endo says. I would like to take baby aspirin every day, for preventing more dvt, but I think vitamin e and red wine is all I can do. I take the aspirin when my symptoms get worse, I have venal insufficiency from a dvt and sometimes it feels like another dvt. the symptoms get better with aspirin and wine.

Your A1c is certainly good, even with some fluctuations. You also say your BP is completely normal. I think high blood sugar and high BP are big risk factors for kidney disease. If you have neither I would say that watching rather than medicating could be a viable approach.

Yes, discuss with your endo. :)

Thanks Super Sally and everyone else, I will post back to let you know what I end up doing, I think one of the reasons I hesitate to take another med fulltime is that when my brother went all sorts of meds for his heart & cholesterol, he gained tons of weight... I would say that is NOT good. His cholesterol is high though, mine isn't.

Hi Meee,
I've been type 1 for about 52 years now and was put on Lisinopril about 28 years ago after my 2nd child was born and had some protein showing up in my urine. My kidneys repaired within 6 months and I'm still taking it as a precaution. After having D for as many years as I have, I will keep trying to protect all my organs as even after 52 years, diabetes does take its toll on us.

That's good it repaired your kidneys Linda, I'm glad that it protects you. I'm going to do some reading & then decide what to do. I was only diagnosed last May so I'm not sure how long my body has been affected by all of this yet. I feel some symptoms started a few years ago now.
