B12
so. I've been hearing alot that we as diabetics should be taking 3 vitamin B12 pills as a supplement each single day .. so I was just wondering is this true ?? and should we be taking it forever or only when something is specifically wrong ??

Vitamin B is involved with the cellular use of insulin and the transport of glucose across a cell membrane and into a cell. Diabetics that are quite insulin resistant or do not have enough insulins in their body may have abnormal Vitamin B levels. I cannot answer specifically about B12 as I do not know. I would expect that most doctors would treat the insulin resistance or high BGs and expect the persons vitamin B levels to normalize.
No doctor I have ever spoke to has recomended any vitamin supplements to me because I was diabetic. That said, Vitamin B is water soluble so you cannot overdose on it (unless you go super crazy with it) so if you want try I doubt there is much harm.

If you take Metformin you should supplement with B12, as this drug blocks absorption of the vitamin. Shortage of B12 can lead to unhealable neuropathies
I take three drugs (Metformin, a PPi, and steroids) that block or strip B12, so a supplement seems like a Really Good Idea.. There is little or no risk from the usual doses, and I have taken this for years with good results and no side-effectsHH

Is there documentation for this that I can reference somewhere? I'd like to have this discussion with my doc (about Metformin v. B12) and it's always nice to have evidence you can point to.
