Hey,
So the rule of thumb that I use is that 1 roll or 6 pcs is made from about 1/3 cup of rice. So I est. about 20-25 grams of carbs just to be safe........Have fun!

Well, have you tried using The Calorie King Website?

California Roll Sushi- 9.5 oz = 70 carbs= 7 carbs per oz.
Shrimp Roll = 10 oz = 69 carbs = about 7 carbs per oz
Tempura Roll = 11 oz = 87 carbs = 8 carbs per oz.

can go to the Grocery store, find it and see what a normal size roll weight is.. then do the math

Curious how your estimating went. Hope well.

Sushi rice has sweetener added (usually rice syrup), so hard to know. I've gotten into big trouble with sushi (love it!), so now I stick with sashimi.

I usually bolus 4-5 g per piece plus I extend an additional few units (about 20-30%) over the next few hours (I do 3) because for me sushi is the carb that keeps on giving! I love it though so I can't give it up. Happy anniversary, and enjoy your sushi!

I dont know much about suchi. However Calorie King, the website and book, are exceptional tools for figering out calorie content and carbs...

There are also probably at least 100 apps floating around for your iPhone or Blackberry.... so you have easy access. Good Luck.

Hey all thanks for the help. everything was fine and we had a great day out.

actually the biggest challenge was all the walking! we went to ellis island and the statue of liberty before going to china town. i tried to keep things a little bit higher than normal so i wouldn't have to worry about it, and was at a nice 130 after breakfast when we got to ellis island. however, after an hour of walking i started to get that shaky feeling. fortunately i caught things fast, while still in the high 60s. from a few other experiences i've learned that long walks drop me pretty fast, and i planned ahead by prepacking a sandwich, and of course my glucose tablets. i was able to eat the whole sandwich and 2 tablets - 30 carbs in total - without any insulin, and by the time i finished with ellis island, and walking around and up the statue of liberty, my blood sugar had come down all the way to 95, so the plan seemed to work great.

unfortunately, i tried to repeat the plan and it backfired a bit thanks to my wife's preference for fashion over function :). When we got to China town the plan was to walk around and do some shopping for about 2 hours, and then walk to the sushi place. I ate a 30g granola bar without insulin, and we started walking. However, about halfway through, her boots started hurting her feet and we had to settle into a different nearby restaurant earlier than expected. i checked my bs and it was 175 premeal!

I had mostly sashimi and 10 pieces of sushi, plus a little edamame and other minor things, like daikon radish and ginger, but now i was facing 2 challenges - high starting BG and high insulin sensitivity from the several hours we had spent walking. I took 6 units, which would cover around 50g of carbs normally, but i thought i'd get a little extra mileage out of it because of the activity, and i drank a lot of tea.

it was a good thing my starting bg was so high. after dinner, her feet were feeling better and we walked around shopping for another half hour or so. by the time i got my car from the garage i was down to 77! I wasn't trying to get things that low after dinner, but the added walking before and after dinner made things difficult to gauge. Anyway, I took a few sips of gatorade, a few bites of fruit, and a glucose tablet for good measure since it's the fastest thing in my bag, and drove home without issue.

all in all a great day and a happy anniversary. i'm glad that i'm finally able to start returning to my active and adventurous self, even if it's one step or one day out at a time.
