Diabetic Tattoo to Help Monitor Glucose Levels

I just read this article and was VERY excited about the prospect!!

"A special tattoo ink that changes color based on glucose levels inside the skin is under development by Massachusetts-based Draper Laboratories. The injectable nanotech ink could eventually free diabetics from painful blood glucose tests."

Even if (like CGM) it's not directly monitoring blood glucose levels, it sure seems like a safer, less invasive (and cheaper) option to CGM:

being hypo-unaware it would be a benefit to be able to see the change and not have to rely on testing. I am in the process of going to the pump and CGMS but this could be soooo much easier.

How awesome! What a great excuse to get a tattoo.. I've been looking for one!!

I found an organization in San Fran that uses service dogs to detect glucose levels.. I investigated the organization because my puppy exhibits not just a high intelligence, but she sometimes naturally reacts to my levels. The organization currently requires you live near San Fran..

But, both my puppy and my cat have pounced on me in my sleep when I've gone too low. My very first deep low in the middle of the night was stopped by my relentless, pouncing cat. I got up thinking he wanted food, but immediately fell to the floor, shaking and sweating.

Crawling to the fridge for juice, I struggled to take a test. I had been diagnosed just a month before... I was in the low 40s and even after juice, I still dropped a bit. It was a rough hour after that, but I was glad my cat woke me out of it.

hopefully they pass it well i mean they find it is true and diabetics can use it.
Finally my dad is going to let me get one.

But then again...how expensive would it be?
Like if for a regular tattoo its like 45?
Ehh..But who cares its gonna help you & look pretty at the same time!

Very cool. I agree that it probably wouldn't help ensure tight bs control, but just knowing if your numbers are on the way up or on the way down would help determine your food intake.(and/or insulin intake) As for the expense, it's a slam dunk that even if it were a couple hundred dollars, it would pay for itself in no time.(considering the price of test strips...for some of us!)
Just thinking of the possibilities of a design for this tat, has me all excited! A shamrock, a tear, a test strip!!!!!
Manny, you should have a contest for the best design people can come up with!!

Seriously though, GREAT idea! I'm not into tattoos for myself, but one that changes color... I don't think I could resist!
