If you're out and about, do you look for a private spot or do you just do it wherever you are?

If I go to a restaurant I usually test in my truck. Only because I have a Sharps container in my truck where I can dispose of my stuff. However, I do my bolus in the restaurant when I get my meal, and I don't hide it. In fact, I sort of get a kick out of watching some of the people watching me. I even had a police officer say, "You got a Diabetic Pump there?" To which I said, "Yeah, It's an Insulin Pump." I wanted say, "No the pump's not Diabetic, I am," but I kept my humor to myself.

Oh Bobby, you should let your humor out. It screams to get OUT!

If I have to do it at work, I inject myself in front of my co-employees. But during social function, i tried to be as discreet as possible so as not to get attention from other people who don't know me and about diabetes.

my grandfather was diabetic too, if we went to dinner at a restaurant we would rather publicly get out our syringes and say "so! who's going to bend over first?" (for their shot) ... lol

Right then, right there. I was the same way when I was on MDI's. And it is even easier with my new pump. It's a One Touch Ping, which communicates wirelessly with the meter. So after testing, I simply program the settings into the meter (which is communicating with the pump) and after it does the calculations for me, I hit "go". I never have to reveal the pump if I don't want to.

On two different occasions when I was using a Pen for injections, after pulling my pen out and discreetly giving myself an injection, someone around me would pull out their Pen, hold it up for me to see, wave, and give me that encouraging smile that only we who are in this battle together than share. Test/inject in public? I say yes, by all means.

I test and use my pens everywhere!!!!!!!!! Car, restaurant, baseball game, gym, pool, in my seat on the plane and anywhere else you can think of. If I do excuse my self to a restroom to take care of things its only because someone we are with gets squeamish. So I was doing my thing and someone comes in to the restroom and says, I assume you are diabetic.... I said no why until I saw the shock on his face....he froze like a deer in headlights .... then I said yes .... why and he started telling me about his friend who is on the pump.....

I test wherever I am, whenever I feel like it is necessary. I kind of enjoy the offensive remarks or the stares I sometimes get when I am testing -- gives me a chance to send a nice zinger back at someone who is either intolerant or unknowledgeable.

I do both and everything in public. I can not use my abdoman for injection/infusion sights anymore because of scar tissue from injections all my life.

When I was younger, like whenI was 8 or so, I used to try to be discreat, but then I had to be ina bathroom to piss test. And whenI was 12 and they firs came out witht he dextrometer, it was a huge suitcase and took almost 1 min to calabrate and about a min or so to test, plus lugging around that suitcase, you needed as much space to test. But most times it just staed plugged into the wall at home and I woudl shoot up anywhere.

But then again, I got tattoo's on my legs and I am not afraid to drop my pants anywhere in public to show them off, even if I am wearing my orange Home Depot underwear. So a shot, pretty no fuss and no hide for me!

I wish you well

Robert

prime into a kleenex or a napkin. That is what I used to do when I used pens

With the pump, the insulin is easy. For my BG, all I need is a small flat spot. Last evening I tested at a Basketball game, using my Packers jacket on my lap as a table.

I do it where ever I am but do try to show a little respect if I am in diner, people eating do not really need to see the blood when Im testing. But I dont really hide it persay. As some of you have said, I agree that I am not ashamed of it. I tell anyone who has an issue with it that testing my sugar is helping to save my life. :)
