Food allergies definately will make mine spike (soy especially). Just curious. And yes I try to avoid soy-it is not always disclosed, or is just hidden as "flavoring". I try not to eat much in the way of prepared foods. Although it is much easier now than it was 10 years ago.
That's an interesting theory. About the only thing I'm allergic to is cats and I usually just avoid them. Our best friends who had cats lost their last one a year or so ago so it may be mostly a non-issue for me?
Yes, my food allergies do affect my blood glucose one way or another. (Problem foods are gluten, soy and corn.) My BG goes up for various reasons after eating one of them. For instance, since I feel sick, my activity goes down leading to higher BGs. My current accidental ingestion of soy put me to bed parts of the last two days; today I'm trying to ignore my belly and my hives, but I'm running high. Sometimes the accidental intake of an allergen -- not sure which -- make me spacey, so I leave my safe home at my own peril. The spaciness may be due to corn since cornstarch is everywhere.
I have Celiac Disease, so definitely the gluten ruins my digestion which affects when my boluses take effect, acting pretty much like gastroparesis. Since I already have slow digestion, I don't need for it to be worse. Depending on how much gluten I eat, my digestion can be ruined for up to two weeks, something all of us Celiacs are well aware of.
I don't consider the allergies to be as difficult to handle as diabetes, but they certainly complicate controlling the D.
I have a ton of non-food allergies (dust, dust mites, tress, grasses, weeds, molds, cigarette smoke, cats and dogs) and when they are really out of control they do seem to affect my blood sugar. My endo says my body can't tell the difference between fighting off allergens and fighting off a bug, so it behaves like it's sick either way. I only notice this effect when they get really bad and I can't function.
I don't know if my food allergy affects my diabetes because it's a really severe allergy so I never eat even small amounts of the food I'm allergic to. If there is something iffy I just won't take the risk of a reaction. The last time I had a severe reaction (like 10 years ago) I don't remember how it affected my blood sugar because I was more focused on breathing ... I have had some more minor reactions over the years to cross-contamination and also to mystery foods (nervous I'm developing another allergy), but didn't really pay attention to how the reaction might have affected my blood sugar, probably because I was konked out on Benadryl!
I am actually looking into allergy shots so will be curious how they affect my blood sugar. I feel like my immune system is constantly on overdrive and attacking everything in sight. I haven't had so much as a cold in years, which I think is because my immune system is so honed on attack mode that nothing can get through. But on the downside, I've had issues with allergies and related problems (eczema, asthma) and they seem to get gradually worse as I get older, and I am worried I will continue to develop new allergies and/or other autoimmune conditions. I'm hoping allergy shots might help calm my immune system down a bit and make me less reliant on daily allergy medication.
