Fact or Opinion?
when people find out i have diabetes they seem like i'm about to kick the bucket. i've been told numerous things about having diabetes. correct me if i'm wrong but if you take care of yourself, monitor your blood sugar correctly, and exercise, you can live a normal life right?

yes, you can! with tight control... you can live a long and average life! though complications could lead to a slightly shorter life span, don't expect it! trust me... life might be more difficult, now... but things are basically the same. life goes on.

In my opinion we as diabetics have a much better chance at a good life. We constantly , every day are aware of what we do and what we eat and how much we exercise And we have a fantastic and supportive family where regular people don't.

Exactly! I'm rarely sick, in decent control, eat a healthy diet and my cholesterol, blood pressure etc is excellent and would make most non diabetics envious.
Some people are just idiots. They heard about a colleagues great grandfather that had to have their legs amputated and died because of diabetes and that means the same will happen to you and it's totally okay to tell you that to your face, because they're now obviously experts in all things D although they know nothing about you or your D.
I really don't understand that. It's a bit like meeting someone with cancer and saying, 'Cancer, huh? My second cousins girlfriends mother had cancer and died. When are you going to die?'

Mary, I work at a large biopharma. During a recent internal company conference, the CEO of the company was talking about some of the work the company is doing with diabetes and I almost threw up when he mentioned that "this disease is terrible. People die, they lose limbs, .. kidney failure. This is a major problem".
In my mind I was thinking: "WTF? I'm going to die?! I'm going to lose an arm?! Who put this idiot in charge of the company?" And then I looked over and wondered what the Chief Information Officer (CIO) was thinking as he adjusted his bolus.

ha! gosh, i wish companies would start emphasizing to the community that if you take care of your diabetes, you'll live a long happy life instead of filling people's minds with all the negative side affects diabetes can have if you don't control it.

Yes, you can have normal health.
But not if you follow standard medical advice.
The nasty outcomes that Khurt's boss mentioned happen when people follow the ADA blood sugar guidelines which are much too high for health.
I have documented what scientific research NOT run by drug companies selling diabetes drugs has found about the relationship of blood sugar levels and diabetic complications:
Research Connecting Organ Damage with Blood Sugar Level
Keep your blood sugar under 140 mg/dl after meals as often as possible. If you can get back to 100 at 2 hours after eating without risking hypo, do it.
Keep your A1c in the 5% range.
Eat as few grams of carbohydrate per meal as you can tolerate long term. Insulin works a lot better when you don't try to cover heroic amounts of carbohydrate at every meal. Less chance of error and hypo.
