TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Last Friday, Amy Tenderich posted on her blog this news:
"... the FDA has cleared a new wireless diabetes management system called inTouch™·diabetes. The system was created by West Chester, PA-based SymCare, Inc., a company started by Johnson & Johnson.intouch-diabetes

'The new web-based system uses a combination of objective biometric data, education and a rewards program to better engage patients in effective diabetes management.'"

Though there are many details still to be clarified about the announcement, to me the news about the Symcare FDA clearance is positive to the extent that it means wireless transmission of BG data out of meters seems to be in the horizon in the near term.

This seems to be in line with the recent demo that LifeScan did about an iPhone application to connect a Bluetooth-enabled glucose meter with an iPhone.

I REALLY hope that the ability to Bluetooth your BG data is made in an open way, not proprietary. Pharma companies could still create business models around this (such as the Symcare concept) but keeping the data open/available for you to upload to another service (think SugarStats, SweetSpot, LogForLife, etc.) remains an option.

Hope I am not dreaming too much! :)

Man, sounds awesome (i.e stuff I dream about :-D ). Yeah, if they can keep it open and interoperable that would be stupendous.

We're working on our API finally btw, it was put off for way too long (among other things).

Now that you talk about APIs, we will have some very cool announcements to make that have something to do with this... soon.. ;)

Dream on, Manny. Dream on. Never stop dreaming because, when you do, it's all over but the fat lady singing.

More gimmickry what we really need is an accurate blood glucose meter like 10 years ago.

The Accu-chek Spirit uses infa-red technology to transmit data from two meters and the the pump to a Palm Pilot. I understand from "a little bird" that they are developing a Bluetooth system.

Hey Manny,

I've been in touch with the company and am trying to get more info about the product. Lifescan is a J&J affiliate and so is SymCare. Looks like the making of a great IDM (Integrated Diabetes Managment) tool. I'm following up trying to get more info about the specifics of the platform.

Yes this sounds like their on the right track but what took somebody this long to come up with a web-based system like this. I really hope it works and will we be able to assecess it?
