TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

I had my flu shot done this morning. Nearly my entire life (since my diagnosis with Type 1 Diabetes in 84') I have always had my Flu shot done each year. I was told at a young age that it is super important for a Diabetic to get their yearly flu shot "you can possibly die Danny" <--- scare tactics. Two years ago I decided I did not need the shot any longer. I was terribly sick ( on the floor, curled up in the corner in the fetal position sucking my thumb type of sick, like I was really going to die) the past two years during Flu season, so I decided to get it done this year. Will you be getting your Flu shot this year?

Just got mine last June. We have it every year since my spouse and I travels a lot. My lungs are vulnerable too (asthmatic here) so my doctor strongly advised it just for extra precaution.

And Anna...that's hilarious!

I have my appt Monday evening to get my jab. Coincidence or not, I find that when I do not get my yearly shot, I will have bronchitis. If I do get my shot, no bronchitis. Hmmmm.........???????

I will be getting my regular flu shot and the H1N1 shot this season. I called my Dr. to get her opinion and she strongly urged me to get it as she would be getting it herself.

She said this strain of the flu was around in 1956/1957 time frame so older people have some immunity built up for it. Have you heard of any older people dying from this? No. It's all been younger people. She said the flu itself is nastier than your standard flu. No thank you, I will embrace modern medicine this time.

I never remember getting the flu shot when I was younger and I never got sick, But with my new Endo in 2008 I got the flue shot because she insisted. For a few months after the shot I was sick not deathly just miserable and I now have all kinds of allergies. Not to blame the flu shot, but I wont say it didnt help.... Oh well

Work in healthcare and it is pretty much a no brainer. I do not want to put myself at risk caring for those that are sick with the flu. Get my flu shot every year like clock work and probably give about 100 or so at work to patients........ an ounce of prevention as they say.

For perspective, take a look at this site. It's primarily about contaminated vaccine.

I'm not anti- or pro-vaccination, but I've stated in another discussion why vaccines are a problem for me with another autoimmune disease that can make the vaccine virtually ineffective. Doesn't mean it won't be effective for you.

There's some interesting reading on that site, so I just thought I'd pass it along in case anyone is interested. Please don't shoot the messenger! Sorry if the site's already been posted in this thread - don't have time now to read all of it.

I got my flu shot a few weeks ago. The doctor told me to check at the end of Octorber to see if the H1N1 is available yet. If it is, I'll get that one too.

I ironically have not had the flu shot in ten years and have not been sick (other than the d ) in that long . my cousin who asked her dr says that the media is making a big deal and panicing everyone for no need . He seems to think that everyone is running around willy nilly and no need and ironically no one is sick where I am working pt so knock wood .

I usually skip the shot every year. Knock on wood, I haven't had the flu in 20 years (great, now I just jinxed myself). I have to get the shot this year as I am trying to get a job in the health field and all the employers want you to get the shot. I do not want to get it because I get a rash all over my chest when I get vaccines of any type, something about the base they use. I end up having to use steroid creams to get rid of the rash, too fun! At least I am less likely to get the flu if I get the shot :P

No. It is a shot in the dark . They're just gussing which flu strain is goning to hit. Vitamin D3 is the best bet to ward off the flu!

I know a lot of people right now are not getting their toddlers the h1n1 because they said they don't want their babies to be guinea pigs. It is a personal decision but I just don't want my toddler to be dead. We are getting ours next month, and we got our flu shot last week.
