TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

During my last trip to my endo, we discussed the dangers of H1N1 to diabetics. He advised me to take precaution at all times, and if there is a vaccine I should go for it asap. I really appreciate his concern. I am wondering what happens if in the rush to come up with a vaccine pharmaceuticals cut corners and not do enough human trials. The first pharma that produces a vaccine will undoubtedly make a lot of money. I am in two minds about getting vaccinated. I would like to know what all of you think. Thanks.

I will not be getting it i have heard of so many risk about getting it i wont. i just get the regular flu shot and thats it.
I won't be getting the shot either.I don't have alot of faith in the government to act in our best interests.I remember 1999 when they were predicting world chaos because of Y2K.It didn't happen.I am not saying this flu is not going to occur, but that I will take my chances.God is in control of my destiny!
This is not a government conspiracy, it's simply the flu shot with a more specific strain that was developed. Each year the flu shot is developed to match whatever strain they think is going to be coming around. With the H1N1 shot, it more specific and will work better because it is the exact strain that is being carried. In future years, this strain will more than likely be included within the seasonal flu shot.
Avoid flu shots !!!!! Drink Wiskey and as my good friend says "KEEP WALKING", Johnnie Walker
I really have no reservations. I am going ot get it ASAP, and will be happy when I can.

We do need to remember that those of us who were alive in 1976, and if we had the 1976 vaccination (I did), may have some limited immunity. If we are asking why this one is so dealdy to little ones, it may be the 1976 vaccine. Anyway, sign me up, and the quicker the better.

I tried to get vaccinated today. Apparently, no docs in Los Angeles are offering the shot at their offices and all refer to cdc.gov to find a place where its offered to the public. I waited w/ my 4 year old in line for 6 hours! At the 5th hour, they ran out of injections and only offered the mist inhalants. Since I'm diabetic, they told me I could not get the mist-- only the injection! I can't waste my time to wait another 6+ hours in a line again. At least my kid is vaccinated, but MUST get the 2nd inhalant in another 3 weeks per LA county public health.. wut a pain!
I am not getting the flu shot. I got it every year since becoming diabetic and every year, a week or 2 after the shot I am hospitalized for 2 days from the flu. Every single year... Im not getting it this year, just to see what happens
I got my H1N1 vaccine today. Feeling fine.
Varena, my medical team (Primary Care Doc, Endo and CDE) all say the H1N1 vaccine is not needed unless you're a child. They do recommend the regular flu shot.
I read the discussions yesterday and phoned to my doctor today. I prefer to hear it from a specialist.

According to him:
- one have to pay more attention in case of young people (I'm 46, apparently not "young" anymore)
- The "regular" flu is likely more severe than the H1N1
- So far, in Belgium only 8 deaths by cause of H1N1, while a regular flu would have caused more like 800 deaths.
- He has some doubts about the quality of the vaccin... and he didn't read it in the newspaper, but in specialised literature.

His advice to me: not really necessary, and especially because of the last reason, he suggested not to take it.
So, I decided not to take the vaccin.

I asked about the vaccin against pneumonia, and that is something to think about. Nothing against it.
So, I believe I'm going to take that vaccin.

For the record, I got my shot for the regular flu 1 1/2 week ago. I do this since three years and never had a problem with it.
And I asked my wife today to buy some extra vitamines ! This never hurts !!

Take care.
Nicolas.
I had the vaccine with no problem. Might of actually had the flu and it was survivable.
