Raise your hand if you want to eat one of everything when you have a low BG, especially a severe low. Good. GRIEF. It's been this way my entire life. (since I was diagnosed at 9 anyway, which at this point is almost my entire life) I just woke up low. I pump and I'm 100% certain the low was my fault (which is beside the point). Anyway, I want to eat one of everything in the fridge and cabinet. I really have had times before when I would have to dose before it was all said an done. I talked myself into refraining THIS time and am beginning to have rational thought process again.

I use Trader Joe's (7 g carb with 3 g fiber for 2Tb). I would dose for 2g if I ate 1Tb.

You have to choose a counting method for carbs. I use total carbs - total fiber, ignoring non-starchy vegetables. If you count the carbs in your green beans, only subtract 1/2 or none of the fiber, and take a bit of insulin for protein your total dose your total doses shouldn't change as the goal is to keep within range but your ratios will be different. You will get into trouble dosing for someone else's carb counts if you use a different carb counting system.

I'm glad your heading towards normal as well. Diabetes is hard enough without the pain.

Thought I'd jump in too, Lynne. When I was on MDI I waited 20 minutes after bolusing to eat. Actually it was the same on the pump too but only has changed since I started on Symlin. For me the 20 minutes seemed to work well to get the insulin going in my body before I ate. I would wait longer if I was a bit high, eat right away if I was a bit low. You can try different timing too to see what gives you the best result. I always eat some form of eggs for breakfast. I currently during the week eat eggs scrambled with chiles, tomatoes and onions and 1/2 of refried black beans, plus the milk in my capp = 23 carbs. On the weekends I eat like an omelette and potatoes or vegie eggs benedict on a double fiber muffin and those are like 33 carbs. I love yogurt and will eat it for lunch with fruit. Yogurt, granola and fruit used to be my favorite breakfast but I can't do that anymore. But eggs have endless possibilities such as with different vegies or if you eat meat, breakfast meats which don't have carbs. (I don't think)
Oh, yes, flavored yogurts have sugar, so it can hit you pretty fast with a crash after. You might be better off with a more complex carb such as a slice of whole wheat toast with some kind of eggs. Or if you prefer yogurt, even fresh fruit like berries with plain yogurt would be around the same carbs but not as unpredictable effect.

Geesh, I just re-read my own post again. I should never respond about I:C ratio, because I always say it backwards! Yes, 2:35, would be about 1:17 which is the direction you want to change it if you are often low. (I say it backwards, but when I'm tweaking my own ratios, I always do it right...fortunately!)
It's ok. 2 units for 30 carbs is a reasonable dose and you certainly did the right thing to stop the falling blood sugar although I wouldn't bother with crackers and would just use a glucose tab or two. Exercise - include shopping - right after a bolus often drives me low and that might be the case this morning.

I would just test every hour or so and/or when you feel like your blood sugar is too low. One tab should raise you about 20 points if you aren't crashing. You may end up a bit high as everything kicks in. Just deal with it at the next meal.

I have a service dog that is trained to alert me as I start to get low. I will have a few drinks from a coke can and feel better in minutes. With out I would extremely lows to the point of passing out.I have been Type one also from the age of 9. You think I would notice them my self, Not. Prior to getting the service dog when I have a low I would eat anything to get it high. My Husband found me on the kitchen floor and same thing you have to do something about this then It would take me days to get my sugars back down. If you continue to get lows look into a service dog he has saved me dozens of times. Once with appendix infection.
I'm lucky that I've never had this symptom of extreme hunger and from what I've read on here, that's fairly unusual. I just take 2 glucose tabs if I'm in the 50s, 3 if it's lower and I know that in a short time I'll feel better; I think of the glucose tabs as "medicine". I've experienced binge eating disorder in my life and like to think I would never binge eat today,(it's been 16 years since I have ), but just "take my medicine", but since I don't have the hunger symptom I probably shouldn't say for sure how I'd react!
I don't even think it's hunger. I think it's just an overwhelming desire to fix it.
That makes sense. So then what you need to do is convince your brain that 2 glucose tablets will fix it better and faster than an ice cream sundae, without the later extreme rise in blood sugars!
But the ice cream sundae is so much more delicious!
Well yeah, changing habits like that only works if you really want it to! People do get pretty attached to their "goodies".
There are times that I definitely quit eating (like last night), but a severe low (in the middle of the night) almost always causes the urge. And those times are rare. And I gotta tell ya, I would rather eat cardboard than eat 2 glucose tablets (that are going to feel like giant pieces of chalk in my mouth) at 2am.
Ditto, but I never eat sundaes. :) I do use lows to eat something that I might not normally eat.
