Raise your hand if you want to eat one of everything when you have a low BG, especially a severe low. Good. GRIEF. It's been this way my entire life. (since I was diagnosed at 9 anyway, which at this point is almost my entire life) I just woke up low. I pump and I'm 100% certain the low was my fault (which is beside the point). Anyway, I want to eat one of everything in the fridge and cabinet. I really have had times before when I would have to dose before it was all said an done. I talked myself into refraining THIS time and am beginning to have rational thought process again.

Glucose tablets aren't supposed to taste good, they're medicine, and you'll never overeat them! Though I know some people eat those Smarties things I hear about and it doesn't sound like they are tempted to overdo with those either. I personally would rather grab two glucose tabs from my nightstand, chew them and go back to sleep then get up and eat a lot of crap that I'm going to feel guilty about later, then deal with a roller coaster of highs and lows for the next several hours!
I use glucose tabs as well and always have a roll of them in my pocket and on the nightstand. I don't get the mad munchies when I'm low and I'm not sure if knowing that carbs are immediately at hand reduces the panic eating or if I'm just missing the basic biologic response (not a good thing).

Right on Yount At Heart. That's the point. Like to me the whole post isn't about "what to do in case", but more about the fact that the urge exists. And the fact that even if I woke up with chalky tablets next to my bed, it wouldn't mean that I would limit myself to two, because when I am groggy and my brain isn't working at full throttle I would still panic if I let myself.

And Zoe, it's good that it's just that easy for you, but it's not for me. I mean, let's face it....we may all have Type 1 but we are not all exactly the same. I do stop myself, but I haven't always. It's not about whether or not I have glucose tablets, which I do use, next to my bed or not. And I totally agree with you about not wanting to feel guilty but feeling guilty or not about eating everything or wanting to eat everything doesn't take away the urge.
Yeah I'm guilty of using the lows to get to eat sweets. Guilty, guilty, guilty. Way back when I 1st took Type 1 my mom would say "You have cornflake weak spells" B/C I wanted Cornflakes with milk and would fake a weak spell just to get them. That was when they done calories not carbs and for some reason she bleivedme for awhile there! LOL!
Haha! I recently bought some glucose tabs for the first time in years (I always choke on their dust and think they are gross) and these energy chew gummy things that have about 3.5 carbs each to deal with that issue. However, once my blood sugar gets to 60 and is dropping fast, I get extremely hungry and crave all sorts of foods. Once I get to 50 and the 40s I get panicky and will eat anything and everything around me.

The other day I felt a low coming on (62), so I had 2 glucose tabs and some chocolate covered almonds because they looked really tasty. I checked myself 10 minutes later and was 54 and mega shaky. I just went crazy and ate a packet of cheese cracker sandwiches, one of my bigger juice boxes, and various other things. I left a trail of crumbs, wrappers, and testing strips behind me.

One time after spending the day in DC and getting some cupcakes for later from the infamous Georgetown Cupcake, I treated a low from over-bolusing for my cupcake with another cupcake. Apparently Georgetown Cupcake's cupcakes are much less carby than I thought. I was so mad I had eaten 2 of the 4 cupcakes I got within the same hour, though.
Lol, that is awesome to treat a low from a cupcake with another cupcake. Cupcakes in general are just good ideas all around! Kinda strange that they weren't as carby as you thought. I'll keep that in mind when I storm Magnolia Bakery in New York next week!
Aahhh... the dreaded Glucose Tablet Dust! I hate that stuff. Especially since I always refill the pocket-sized tubes from the larger containers.
Raise of hand! :(
I do it too. I want to eat until I feel better. I have started carrying cans or coke or rootbeer with me everywhere and I have an app for my phone that tells me if it's too much and to take a shot (starting my omnipod this week, we'll see how that changes things) if it is too much. Seems to work really well. Lows make me hungry. EXTREME lows make me REALLY hungry. It's a fight but I think I'm winning. :D
Yea I have always wanted to eat until I feel better when I feel that way. It's like eventually awakening from a drunken stupor when I realize my mistake and start to calculate all the eaten carbs. Luckily I did not overdo it last night. Good luck with your pod. I love mine so far.
I woke up at 5:15AM feeling low. Check it. Yep, 38. Lesser lows, and not in the middle of the night, I limit myself to about 15G of carbs, wait 15-20 minutes and check BG again. If I feel like it is going down further or again after I start feeling better, I check my BG again. Early this morning, since it was 38, I just drank a 7up Retro. ( I don't consume anything with high fructose corn syrup and it is sugar-sweetened.) 39G of carbs, which was a little more than I needed so I woke up this morning with my BG 127. If I hadn't been going back to bed after I treated my reaction, I would have punched the carbs & my BG into my pump and took whatever insulin I needed to cover the excess after I was back up to normal. That doesn't cover it if my liver also releases a glucose surge, but since that doesn't usually happen, I deal with that later when I test and I have spiked.
Smarties Candy have saved me from this! In the past, I'd head for the kitchen and grab whatever looked like it had sugar in it. The problem with that was most things I grabbed had other things like fat, protein and or complex carbs. When I ate stuff like cookies, ice-cream or whatever, it took so long for my BG to rise I'd end up getting desperate and eating everything in sight!

These days, I know I can down a roll of Smarties (6 grams of almost pure dextrose) and raise my BG 15 points within 15-20 minutes. The other plus is the dextrose hits my system so fast I can start feeling better within 5-10 minutes. For me, having a plan for lows and knowing exactly how much of a very fast acting food to eat helps keep me from going nuts on the pantry.
