TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Before I joined any of the online diabetes communities I only knew a few people with diabetes in my personal life and most of them were either from High School or much older than I am. So, I was wondering how many people do you know offline that have diabetes? And, I'm curious what community/city/town you live in?

I know about 35 diabetics offline - and soon to be more. I am now sharing the role of the President of the West Island Diabetes Association here in Montreal, Quebec - so hoping to get more D's out to mingle! I'm also working with a dietician on the 18th Nov in one of the Walmart's here - to educate folks on diabetes - looking forward to that! Of course, will also be handing out the Tudiabetes cards that Manny sent to me - those are getting distributed everywhere I go in my travels!

Several T2's but, only 2 other T1's and one of them was someone I met here on Tu and we decided to get together for coffee one evening! I was a little surprised when I went to work for a large teaching hospital here in St. Louis, MO and there were 2 of us T1's on a small staff of clinical people. We were also about the same age...both wondered what happened in St. Louis in about 1960's?? to cause our autoimmune dz??

I know three people, all have T1. My cousin, My uncle's wife, and a woman who volunteers at my religion class she also lives in my neighborhood, oh wait I know four, another woman who also lives in my neighborhood. I used to know a whole family who had kids who had T1, I was friends with a girl who was diagnosed after she moved and I saw her a couple years later at diabetes camp. I also knew a guy who was Diagnosed T1 in junior high. in high school one of our student body president's was T1 and he was so sweet. I don't know many T2's if I do then I don't know about them.

I know a whole "bunch" of people with diabetes actually....family, friends, colleague, 2 students....and members of the diabetes support group which I facilitate!
Some type 1...some type 2....some on diet/exercise only.....some on meds....some on shots....some on the pump. It's amazing how many of us are out there.
I live in south western Ontario....but my family is scattered across Canada.

It's like this...

I was diagnosed 18+ years ago. I met a few T1's at the hospital, but then for the next 17 or so years, I really didn't "know" anyone with diabetes. Honestly, I didn't want to know anyone with diabetes like me.

Then I found tudiabetes.

Now I can happily say I've met more T1's in person than I have fingers and toes. As far as things I've done with my extended T1 family...breakfasts, lunches, dinners, concerts, drinks, coffee, art shows, volunteer work, racquetball, distance running, walks, fitness classes, dancing, surfing, bonfires, wii boxing, hugs and high fives.

But above all things, sharing stories and tons of laughter.

This community is such a blessing, and I'd like to thank all my T1's friends that have taken the time to share a moment with me face to face.

With that said, if anyone out there with T1 diabetes wants to hang out in San Diego or Los Angeles (weekends) and have lunch or whatever, just give me a holler.

Really, it's that simple...I always brake for Type 1's.
