I'm a T1 with a Medtronic Paradigm. I use the Bolus Wizard and don't think much about how I'm taking.
Once in a while, I check my totals:
Main Menu > Utilities > Daily Totals
My lowest daily total was 40u. My highest was 85u. Monthly avg. was about 55. The numbers surprise me.
I am curious. How much do others pump?

Permalink Reply by Sam Iam on April 27, 2012 at 8:09am Sounds like we eat a similar diet. Same height. I'm about 30 lbs heavier than you. I take > twice as much insulin. Interesting.
Permalink Reply by Sam Iam on April 27, 2012 at 7:44am No, never. Well, maybe a cookie or something occasionally. I actually lost my taste for sweets a long time ago.
A sandwich is usually about 60g. A reasonable serving of Pasta or pizza: about 75. That's why I'm amazed people can eat 20 or 30g in a day.
I've tried cutting carbs, find myself starving all the time, despite eating handfulls of peanuts. I'm fairly skinny and active, so often correcting lows.
I'm going to try to do a better job of restrict carbs and make some changes, though.

Permalink Reply by Sam Iam on April 27, 2012 at 11:05am I could see that; including regular soda, desserts, etc.
I would encourage you to rethink your diet as well. With tight control, you may be able to preserve beta cell function. My numbers were good, too, for a few years after I was diagnosed. They went downhill fast. We know a lot more about D, now than we did then. There are many things I'd do better if I had a time machine.

Permalink Reply by Sam Iam on April 27, 2012 at 12:55pm I'm be curious to hear what others have to say about this. I really don't know. I'd also be tracking c-peptides, antibodies, etc. I've never had any of these tests done, myself. According to Dr. Faustman's research, we may be able to hang onto some beta cell function for decades.
Permalink Reply by still_young_at_heart on April 27, 2012 at 1:01pm My endo has said that tight control MIGHT preserve beta cells. I think there are hints out there but no definative studies.

Permalink Reply by Sam Iam on April 27, 2012 at 5:01pm I think the issue is that Ben's control may be pretty good, but what's left of his beta cells are probably working pretty hard to keep it that way. Will that kill them or provoke his antibodies? If he takes more insulin or eats less carbs, will they produce less?
I am really curious about this. I am enrolled in Dr. Faustman's trial, and I'm really curious about my results. Since it's a double-blind trial, I doubt they'll give me much (if any) information.
When I had my C-peptide tested 3-4 years ago, it came in at less than .1 (ng/mL?). So, I've just taken it for granted since then that I produce no insulin. I really wonder if that's true, even after 27 years of DM type 1.

Permalink Reply by Sam Iam on May 6, 2012 at 10:03pm Saw a couple things that make me want to come back to this. Noticed US RDA is 300g carbohydrate. Also read about a few accounts of honeymoon period lasting years, possibly indefinitely by avoiding carbohydrates. Something you might want to look into. Good Luck!
Low day was 12.xx, highest 24.xx last 50 days or so, average around 17 per day probably.
