TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Lucile K.

If you could give a diabetic your favorite piece(s) of advice, what would it be?

My advice: Diabetics are like snowflakes, no two are alike. So, be informed about diabetes treatment choices (medications, what you eat, exercise, etc.); know diabetes, yourself, and how you are doing. Because, the success of controlling our diabetes is up to us; our doctors & educators merely support us with advice and care.

David, about your card I wonder why they only have old people!!! Is it just for Type 2???

I am sure they are old T1 also. Plus I am T2, I am not old by far. My advice would be listen and learn and use the info now that way when you get older you want regret it.

Ahem..... First: One can hope that there are old T1's - because they have lived long and healthy lives.
Second, my hubs just had his pancreas removed - which made him an instant T1 and, well, let's just say he's past 50.... and 60....

Just so you know.....

It's not just the young that get to have the fun!

Diabetes is like your best friend, treat him good and take care of him, he will do the same to you!

Put yourself first. Do the best "You" can, and what works for you.....we are all different. And enjoy your life, make good memories. Educate yourself about diabetes and the treatment you are on....... and live!

Don't let the thought of long term complications get to you, if you take care there will be none.

Don't expect to be perfect and have perfect blood sugars and always do exactly what you're supposed to.

(I, of course, do not follow that advice. I am a perfectionist, and it drives me absolutely insane that my sugars aren't somewhere between 80 and 120 ALL the time. But it's still advice you should follow.)
