TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Lucile K.

If you could give a diabetic your favorite piece(s) of advice, what would it be?

My advice: Diabetics are like snowflakes, no two are alike. So, be informed about diabetes treatment choices (medications, what you eat, exercise, etc.); know diabetes, yourself, and how you are doing. Because, the success of controlling our diabetes is up to us; our doctors & educators merely support us with advice and care.

Remember there are no two diabetics that are the same, we are like snowflakes. Make sure that you check with a diabetic nutrionalist or dietcian as soon as you can and then maybe 1 or 2 a year to regroup and check the foods that you are eating and any changes that you might want to make. Also, advocate for yourself, and educate yourself. Docs get about 10 minutes of education on diabetes, so it's very possible that we know more than they do, certainly, we know more than they do about our bodies. Put together a health care team, a doc, a nurse, a nutritionalist, a good friend and whom ever else you need to make decisions and help you decide what's best for you. Eat right, drink right, exercise, journal, record your BG's. And relax.
