TuDiabetes

My nephew Tom Hinerman recently commented on some aspects of type 1 diabetes and the challenges it poses for those trying to acquire life insurance. I thought an overview of diabetes, both type 1 and 2, from a life insurance underwriter's perspective might be of value.

I ran across an interesting article in DLife last week, "25 things about having diabetes". Number 1 was "Most of the time I've had diabetes I've been in denial".
This really struck home because it's probably very close to home for all of us who have dealt with a chronic disease, and it also happens to be a pivotal issue for life insurance underwriting. One of the most critical issues for underwriters is whether the person understands and is actively proactive about their glucose control.

Too often, and I blame doctors for this, diabetes patients don't truly get educated as to what the possible impact is when diabetes isn't taken seriously and patients, because of this, often don't put the emphasis on their treatment and new lifestyle that they should.

In another recent post I reviewed some of those issues that underwriters look most closely at and why.

Bottom line. There is reason for optimism. Diabetes does not have to be the end of your desire to protect your family through life insurance. It doesn't even have to be the end of good rates.
