MSN Today's News: Clerk gives robber $40 of his own for insulin

Clerk gives robber $40 of his own for insulin
‘I hate to do this,’ man with gun says, then thanks victim for money

FORT SMITH, Ark. - A convenience store clerk wouldn't open the register for a robber but gave the man $40 from his own pocket after the robber told him he needed the money for insulin.

Police were called Monday night to the E-Z Mart, where the clerk explained that a man he didn't know entered the store and lifted his shirt to display a pistol tucked in his waistband.

The clerk said the man told him, "I hate to do this," and told him he needed $40 from the register.

The clerk said money in the register wasn't his to give. It was then the robber said the money was for insulin. The robber accepted the money from the clerk's wallet, thanked him and shook his hand.

Police are searching for the robber

Sounds like he buys ReliOn insulin at Walmart. It's actually Novolin R or N repackaged, but last I heard it cast something like $32 a vial. If that's what he's surviving on I also pity him. Used R myself for nearly 40 years years before they came out with Humaolg, then Novolog that works SO much better in my insulin pump.

Well he is in the US so may be co-pay as what Katherine said. But just for your information, I lived a while overseas in a third world country and the same insulin vial (lilly, Novo..) that you got here for $75 it costs like $14 without insurance, just buying it directly from a pharmacy! Am not sure if it was the taxes or what?

Selling it for $14 and overseas = cost +shipping+ profit for who ever sell it!

If I was ever in this predicament I would go to the emergency room.I would think by doing this you would get short term help and hopefully put in touch with people who could help long term. I mean in America would the laws just let us die because we have run into bad luck? I hope we have not become that.

maybe he already had the other $50 for a $90 (ish) bottle of insulin?

Walmart? Rite Aid charges $120. I wouldn't rob my own pharmacy. Gotta stay nicey-nice with the drug dispensers. Maybe he was buying strips and didn't want to "explain" to the guy he was robbing.

Original article says the convenience store was "robbed frequently": http://www.swtimes.com/articles/2009/05/27/news/news052709_08.txt

Aw, that's so sweet!
I can certainly understand the robber's situation. I mean, between life and death, what's $40... or a jail sentence for that matter?

I don't think I wuold have the guts to do it, but if put up against a wall, who knows?

yeah i dont know what i'd do either. i had a situation once where i couldnt get a prescription i needed and actually considered getting it illegally. (which is completely out of character) i can understand this dude's desperation but also i think there were probably better ways to get the insulin! that poor guy :(

One of the reasons health care costs what it does for those who pay out of pocket is that you pay for your educator/ ER/Dr to give free or nearly free care/meds to those in need. Because of the HMO's Insurance companies figured out they can tell health care providers what they are willing to pay (called negotiation) these other costs get pushed onto self pay patients.
You can go to your doc or an ER and they will try to help. But all of those costs get pushed to the hospital/clinic/ER and on to the patients.

Something tells me the robber probably didn't ask specifically for $40 (how many times have we read articles that are inaccurate?? A LOT!). Maybe the clerk just had $40 on him?

I doubt it would be for a co-pay... co-pays are when you have health insurance, and you have health insurance when you have a job, so I don't now if he'd be that desperate to cover a $40 co-pay. It's a strange story indeed, but maybe he just needed a bit more money or something?

Like I said, I don't think he specifically asked for $40. That's just too weird. Ask a friend! Don't rob a store!

I have a good insurance policy, but my insulin copay is $46 a vial, they cover half.
