TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

I have been T1D for nearly 11 years (this september will be # 11 anniversary).

I miss not having to worry all the time and was wondering, pondering, if maybe it was possible to take ONE DAY off from my T1D maintanence. I'm not sure if this is even possible AT ALL, but for my 11 year anniversary, I was wondering if anyone else has taken a day off- one single day for no injections, no BG testing, etc.

I don't mean to go and eat ten cakes and still not inject, but even if I had to eat just salads for the day, would it be possible to take a "day off" of T1D?

Has anyone else done this without major problems?

On a more serious note, I used to know someone who decided to take regular "holidays" from diabetes. Note that I said I used to know him.

He was my sister's friend more than mine, but I was interested in hearing about him because he was the only other diabetic I knew at the time. Anyway, when I met him, he was blind. He said that one day, he decided to see what would happen if he took a holiday from his diabetes. He didn't test, didn't inject, and ate whatever he wanted. Well, nothing bad happened that he couldn't handle (I guess being extremely thirsty and peeing all the time weren't that much of a bother to him.) So he decided to take regular "diabetes holidays." Once a year, then once a month, then once a week.

The end result was, he died. I don't know specifically what he died of, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to all his "diabetes holidays."

Oh Rainbow - now that is not a good story of a "diabetic holiday". I've never taken one in all my years - I'm a programmed little soldier I guess - yes Sir!!!

Off subject (sorry for taking over your thread Ms. Marps) - many thanks for everyone's help on my little prob - will check into all the points that were made.

Back to regular programming ......

haha. A little side story is not a problem. It's like the "love story" in the middle of the "Murder Mystery"

If you can't get someone to test for you, bolus for you, I guess you could have a steak and salad kind of day, scrambled eggs, etc. You would still need a shot of long-acting, or pump for your basals. And you would still have to test a bit, because you are not guaranteed to stay stable even without carbs. Maybe just do three or four checks and eat no carb? You can't reason with Type 1; you may take a vacation but, unfortunately, Type 1 does not. Hope you can get a loved one to take over for you, maybe even for more than one day.
