Following initial diagnosis and partial response to pills I went to the Endo

He gave me Humulin H insulin and told me to have ten units in the morning and ten units at night. Initially I saw a great improvement in the day time readings but not much improvement in the night and first morning reading.

Reporting back my stats the doc increased to twenty units in the morning and twenty two in the evening.

Now I see no progress and my day time readings have got worse

First day the day time readings went as low as 140 and lunch time reading today was 295!! Eating well - salads and salmon, salads and meat, no carbs, etc

confusion and frustration!

I have trouble reconciling that with:

this morning had some cheese and rice cakes....

It may help the others offer comments if you give a detailed 24hour log of your day, including your menu (in detail with portion sizes, drinks, sides, the lot), meal timing, dose timing, exercise etc.

I suspect you may be eating more carbs than you realise.

I don't have last night or today on me right now.... now i am looking at it, perhaps i am eating way too much? but i am only eating when hungry,... not stam eating

I personally do not view that eating pattern as too much but we all have our own ideas about that.

I do note that when you do have carbs your blood sugar does tend to be elevated. I also note that your best blood sugars come whent the NPH is most active (around the middle part of the day). All of this leads me to believe you need to REALLY advocate for adding Regular insulin with the NPH.

I do not think that 100% cutting out of all carbs would get you to where you need to be although this clearly shows that without Regular insulin cutting out the carbs is your best bet....

I'll leave the comments on insulin and doses to the insulin users. But on the diet my immediate reaction was that unless the portion sizes are large that is very low-cal and the carbs that you are eating are the wrong carbs, at least they would be for me.

I call bananas super-carbs because of the effects they have on my BGs. Or had; I haven't eaten one for eight years and I live in a banana-growing district (the other major crop around here is sugar cane; what a great place for a diabetic to live :) ) My list of super-carbs is small, but rice - and all rice products - are also on it. Super-carbs are foods which spike me much more than the grams of carbs imply they should.

It's not difficult to relate some of your high numbers to your fruit intake, but the delayed spike after the salmon and salad is odd. Are you doing some sort of exercise in the evenings? Do you have any snacks after dinner? Possibly you should, because unless there are lots of carbs in that salad you may be having a liver dump of some sort at that time.

The other thing which stands out is your avoidance of meat. If you are pesco-ovo-vegetarian I suggest you add more fish to your day, and a wider variety of types. Consider adding seafoods and other types of fish for some variety and a wider range of nutrients. Or, if you are not pesco-ovo-vegetarian just add some meat to give a smoother protein intake to your day.

JMO. I'm just a diabetic, not a dietician.

shea, you're getting a LOT of good info here. It can be overwhelming. Please don't try to do everything at once... one thing at a time. I would start by learning how many carbs are in various foods - you can look them up on line; Calorie King is one of many sites with an extensive food database.

Choose a goal for each meal. How many carbs do you want to eat for breakfast? lunch?....and stick close to it. Don't make changes too fast, give each change a few days and see what happens. You may or may not see a pattern. Choose what you want to eat, count the carbs, then tweak as needed.

I can't say enough not to try to do too much at once. One step at a time, one day at a time, without beating yourself up. There is a LOT to learn :)

Patience is certainly a virtue in all areas of growth - knowledge; spirituality and here for the first time with me - health!

I appreciate the comment, I certainly have been feeling somewhat overwhelmed and frustrated.... I am going to look at this website and consider some meals!
