I was wondering if these are normal #'s are would this be considered brittle. My fasting today was 126 ( I had 1/2 banana before bed), I ate 2 pieces low sugar toast with sharp cheese for breakfast, took my 1000 mg of Met.HCL, my 2hr. was 165, one hour later I was down to 95, I ate a 1 ounce piece of sharp cheese, and 1 hour later I was down to 85. It was 4 1/2 hours since my breakfast. It seems like I have to eat something every 2 hours now to keep from going low.

no, the term "brittle diabetes" used to be used for wild swings such as from 400 to 40. those are normal swings you have.
First, let me say, what's wrong with 85? That's a good number!

Just curious - why 1/2 banana before bed? Maybe try some protein if you need a bed time snack. Also, regarding the toast - it is not the sugar that matters as much as the number of carbs per slice. I can do 1 slice of lo-carb bread at one time, but I would usually wait until 10 am or so. I only do proteins when I first wake up.

Yes, I understand the dilemma of having to eat something every few hours - but I have to eat every few hours to keep my bs from going up, up, up - I know, seems counter-intuitive, doesn't it? Anyway, I haven't quite figured out why this is so, but I've discovered that just a bit of protein every few hours does the trick. As long as I go very low-carb, my body can naturally return good after-meal numbers - but it can't deal with the overnight fast or long breaks between meals, so I have to take basal insulin.

Your issue may be related to whatever oral medication you are taking. For example, if you are taking a sulfonylurea, it stimulates your beta cells to secrete insulin for 8 - 12 hours whether or not glucose is present in bloodstream; in other words, whether or not it's needed. In addition, these meds can cause hunger (I'm talkin' real, gnawing hunger) and weight gain, and because it can drive down your bs, you can be in the position of "eating to your medication."

Yeah, that's what the Doctor said about 70's-90's. He said that's normal numbers. I'm just not used to them yet. I'm thinking on the lines of 110-120 being normal. I don't think mine's a sulfonylurea (metformin HCL). I hope you can get your numbers figured out. Do you have the slow digestion thing? They say that will cause high numbers until your food digest. Oh, the 1/2 of banana thing, it was sitting there and I love them and they are good for you, so I thought why not. I'm getting tired of eating the same things all the time. I'm sure I'm not alone here. Today we went by a doughnut shop and I said Umm, doughnuts. The funny thing is doughnuts never really agreed with me.
It sounds natural that after 2 pieces of toast your sugar would go up, and then the cheese snack would not make it go up as cheese is very low carb, so it would continue to go down.
