Hi everyone! I just thought I'd share my experience with Raw Food because I truly believe it is THE way to be your healthiest as a diabetic.

I was diagnosed type 1 two years ago. I spent the first year on an insulin roller coaster, and was experimenting with many different things to help myself out. I even "donated" my body to a clinical research study for some new drug (didn't do much). After a year of this, I was SO tired. I was absolutely ready for a major change. That is when I found Gabriel Cousen's book, "There is a Cure for Diabetes" and immediately switched to a raw food diet. I was already vegetarian, so it wasn't a very hard adjustment. I noticed that my sugars were much better, and I felt much better and had more energy.

I would eat 3 smallish meals a day; mostly greens and green superfood powders (without fruit in them), nuts, seeds, sprouts, nut mylks,and flax seeds and crackers. I avoided fruit, grain, and beans. The only fruits I consumed were tomatoes (in moderation) and guacamole. I was also very active in between meals. Swimming, walking, bouncing on the rebounder, hula hooping :), and jump roping. My sugars went to NORMAL. I stopped taking insulin. I would wake up at around 80, and go to bed around 110. I was SO happy.

I also went to the Tree of Life, which was an amazing experience and a very profound spiritual opening for me. If you can go, by all means, do. But I know that you can do this on your own as well. The point I want to make is that a Raw Food diet is amazing for Diabetes. And every person I have met or talked to or read about who has been a type 1 able to get off of insulin, has done so with raw foods and an active lifestyle, while working to reduce stress and be happier. BUT another point I want to make is this: Raw Food is the best thing you can do diet wise for your diabetes, no matter what type it is. This, however, does not mean that you will be able to get off of insulin necessarily. As a naturopathic student, I have learned that there are many other factors that can impede your recovery. This is what happened to me after a month free of insulin:

I developed a low-grade bronchial infection after traveling to India. I tried to take herbs and vitamins to knock it out, but after a month felt pretty sure I needed an extra boost. This is before I started studying up on natural medicine seriously. I went to the doctor, who prescribed an antibiotic. I took the full dose. It didn't work, so I went back again- he gave me another one. It didn't work. So finally he gave me Z Pack. This finally did the trick. But....my blood sugars rose and would not come back down. Let me back up a little and say that as a child I had had pneumonia several times, and was always treated with antibiotics. Then I ruptured my kidney in a motorcycle accident and subsequently had to deal with chronic kidney infections for the whole of my teenaged life until I was 22. Obtaining antibiotics for these infections was routine for me. I would stroll into the ER and ask for Cipro. It was an annoyance at most. Little did I know the damage they were doing to my intestinal tract. So, it turns out that I am dealing with Leaky Gut syndrome. That is when the membranes of your intestinal tract allow big proteins from the food you eat to enter your blood stream, causing your immune system to launch an attack and can lead to autoimmunity and food sensitivity. I am currently doing a program to heal this condition.

My point is this: Raw Food is GREAT. It is the best thing (in my opinion) for diabetes. And, it may lead you to be able to stop taking insulin because your sugars may stabilize at healthy levels. But don't be discouraged if it doesn't quite work that way for you, because you may have other underlying issues to deal with. As I do. So make sure you find a doctor (I prefer natural doctors) who can put the pieces together for your individual and specific case. Because if you can treat the other imbalances and deficiencies you may have, then raw foods may bring you back to better health. SO don't give up!

I am currently not taking insulin. I eat small raw meals, and exercise about 3 times a day, for 20 minutes to an hour each time. I drink lots of pure water, take herbs (gymnema, banaba, chromium, nopal, vanadium, ginseng...etc.), and drink beanpod tea and culinary cinnamon extract in water.

My sugars are not perfect yet, but I feel awesome. The more active I am, and the more pure my foods are, the better I feel and the more my sugars respond favorably.

I honestly don't have a list of what I eat yet because I am just figuring this all out. It is difficult for a vegan who already has a limited list of things they can eat to adjust. Right now, nothing fills me up and that is the problem I am facing. I still don't understand what the portions are for this disease. They seem pretty small though. I don't know what the carb limit is for a day if I did I could figure this out to some extent.

For me, I have always had a "small" stomach and I have alway been skinny (even before being veg) but I still ate alot of bread and that filled me up.

I am a veg for ethical reasons. I lost my taste for eggs a long time ago. They just taste weird to me now. But you should have what is right for you.

There are veg things with protein in them. There just aren't as many choices. Nuts,peanut butter. Greens have some protein in them and avocadoes. Right now I am having some black beans and I have no idea whether not I can have these or not but this is almost all I have in my house and I won't have money to buy foods until next week so I have to make due. Plus I am having some steamed cauliflower. I am very week and I need to have some thing with protein in it.

I might be wrong but most veggies you can a bigger portion to fill you up. Esp greens you can eat more of them.

What are your BG readings in a typical week? Low, fasting (morning), High?
Vivelle, it is impossible for a type one to go without any insulin in their body, if you are reacting normally you may be another form such as type 1.5. I agree with what you say about the raw food, low carb however, I too follow that diet and only take 7 units of insulin a day. however, if I went without all insulin as a type one diabetic, I would not survive. So your pancreas must be still producing a small amount of insulin.
Just wondering if Vivelle is still around to let us know how this is working for her? I've seen more information on this subject recently and wanted an update from her.
Hi, I just recently found your post, but I wanted to say that your story sounds similar to that of Zippora Karz. She has been on dLife and wrote a book about how she was first diagnosed as a T2, went on a raw-food type of diet and did not take insulin, and then finally got the correct diagnosis as T1. Her book is called "The Sugarless Plum," and it's really interesting. It follows her dancing career in detail, and how she was a professional ballerina with D.
Anyway, I think she still practices some natural healing-type remedies, but she does take insulin. I guess she was one of those LADA/Type 1.5 patients whose insulin function eventually stopped altogether.
FWIW, I agree 100% with Kristin and Dino. It's very dangerous to stop taking insulin, no matter what diet you're following. If raw foods could cure us all then I think we'd have jumped on that bandwagon a long time ago! Just my $0.02.
I find it very interesting how strongly some T1s hold onto that diagnosis. I am a T1 ( since 1988 ) and I still want a CURE. I don't want a new drug or device...I want a CURE. Your diabetes may manifest differently than mine but that doesn't mean we don't both have T1. I have read the Gabriel Cousens book and found it very interesting. His ideas on WHAT diabetes IS is different than most run of the mill doctors believe it to be; that doesn't mean his ideas are wrong. I have experimented with a raw diet and found it a worthwhile experiment. I don't know if I could be off of insulin but maybe I could. If a cure were offered in a pill would you be as hesitant to try it? You must take in all of the info and think for yourself. All new treatments come with chances.. new drugs and new procedures are also chances...so whats the difference. I have had 2 extreme reactions to drugs, that doesn't mean I would never consider taking a new drug...just that I try to make the best decision for myself.

Pardon me if you already know this but if your bg ever starts to creep up, it may be because your remaining insulin production has gone away. You must be producing a small amount of insulin in order to not need an injections. (Even if you ate no sugar, your liver produces sugar 24/7.) Again, pardon me if you already know this. If you ever do lose your remaining insulin production, you might be able to take just a daily long-acting because you are eating almost no carbs. The long-acting would cover your basal and the mini-amount of carbs you eat.

I've never been able to get going on a super maximized diet, so thanks for your inspiring example.
