I recently moved and had to switch Endos. He gave me some recommendations right off the bat that I hadn’t ever heard before; at least not for people with similar stats to mine. He suggested taking (starting now and for the rest of my life) a baby aspirin and Zocor (statin) ever day.
My stats are these: I’ve had T1 diabetes for about 2 years. Age: 35. Good blood pressure. A1c 5.3. Cholesterol 17 (Tri:28, HDL:83, LDL:84), which I thought was pretty-darn good :)
He said that it didn’t really matter if I had good control and seemed to think that the higher risk for diabetics to get heart disease was a reason for all of us to take these medications every day. I’d rather not. Has anyone else heard this? Does anyone else without other risk factors take a statin and aspirin every day? He also mentioned taking fish oil instead if I really didn't want to take the statin. Anyone else on a daily fish oil regime?

Brigitte, like you my body doesn't tolerate statins I've tried them all. Through the years I've tried different kinds of statins and my reaction is the same muscle cramps in the legs.
My cholesterol readings are not the best...but my life is so diminished when I take statins. I've tried twice and both times after a few months end up with horrible muscle pain, unable to walk more than 2 minutes on a dreadmill, vitamin d levels in the tank and a never ending cloud of depression.

Once I get off the meds, the muscles come back first, then the depression lifts, but it takes 6 or more months for my vitamin d levels to recover.

I'm also not so sure that the "levels" of healthy cholesterol that are now the rage are safe. I think the taget levels have been so lowered that eventually our kids will leave the hospital with a prescription for vitamins and statins.

Just want to say Thank You to all of you who have replied to this discussion. Seems it has had a bit of a resurgence since I started it over 2 years ago :) Update: I agree with all of you who have said basically "if it isn't broken, why fix it?". I never started on a statin and am so glad that I didn't. The particular endo that tried to get me to take a statin has actually been put out of business (if you can believe it). His medical license is currently under review and I have found a new endo with a philosophy that I believe comes from knowledge and experience instead.
Lol I didn't even notice that this was over 2 years old! Good for you, glad you are getting the care you deserve!!
My GP wants me to take a statin while my endo completely disagrees with her. They cite the studies that are supported by the very companies that are manufacturing the drug as well as the tight guidelines that really don't necessarily apply to Type 1 diabetics. (If you are one number above the recommended number, then they put you on a statin). I'll continue to read the posts here to see if I might be swayed to take one. Frankly I'm tired of all the drugs.

I'm on the fence but have decided to forgo the statin for now as taking it didn't really seem to improve things anyway.
My Endo told me to take Lipitor about 5 years ago. My cholesterol was elevated at the time. I asked if I would have to take it for the rest of my life and he said yes. Then, watching the Lipitor commercials on TV, they say you shouldn't be pregnant while on Lipitor. So, I told the Endo where he could stick his Lipitor scrip. Some docs really are scrip pushers.

Heart disease does not run in my family. And I hate taking scrips. I don't even take aspirin for headaches.
Not only that, but if something was going to put me at risk of not having kids due to medications at any point in my life, I wasn't going to do it.

Now, 5 years afterward, I've never taken a statin, still don't take aspirin for headaches or anything either. My cholesterol is perfect (took it down naturally) and I'm 4.5 months pregnant with our first baby. A1c is 6.5 and everything is looking good. I take a fish oil capsule a day with my prenatals, and I'm probably going to stay on the prenatals even after baby comes.
I take Crestor and an 81mg asprin. Use to be on Lipitor but when I changed my numbers dropped 30 points
