I recently moved and had to switch Endos. He gave me some recommendations right off the bat that I hadn’t ever heard before; at least not for people with similar stats to mine. He suggested taking (starting now and for the rest of my life) a baby aspirin and Zocor (statin) ever day.
My stats are these: I’ve had T1 diabetes for about 2 years. Age: 35. Good blood pressure. A1c 5.3. Cholesterol 17 (Tri:28, HDL:83, LDL:84), which I thought was pretty-darn good :)
He said that it didn’t really matter if I had good control and seemed to think that the higher risk for diabetics to get heart disease was a reason for all of us to take these medications every day. I’d rather not. Has anyone else heard this? Does anyone else without other risk factors take a statin and aspirin every day? He also mentioned taking fish oil instead if I really didn't want to take the statin. Anyone else on a daily fish oil regime?

Very true that is why all of us need a whole team of doctors so they can get it all together
I don't take any of it i cant take aspirin and i have fibro so taking zocor is a hard thing to try because it can cause muscle weakness.
Fish oil on a daily basis will not harm you and is in all vitiman packs these days. All the drug companies are looking for their future revenue and profits even in these hard times.
Statin makers do something called disease mongering to increase profits (by including more and more medical conditions into their marketing effort to doctors) for rich shareholders. I informed my MD about this when she recommended I start taking a statin even though my blood test was in the normal range. Besides, statins lower cholesterol and the brain is 60% LDL cholesterol and is necessary to make new neurons and many studies link dementia to statin use. Serotonin levels also drop when taking statins so can make a person depressed. It's stress that causes plugged cardiac arteries and blaming LDL cholesterol is like blaming firefighters for the fire. Reduce stress and plan to have some fun every day instead of eating pills.

Don
I was told over 50 years ago to take aspirin every day there were no statins.
I was told by one doctor i saw one that i didn't like that i should go on a statin because i'm diabetc.. He also told me i'm eating way too much protein and it'll hurt my kidneys. My endo and physician have been fine with me not on a statin though and consuming large amounts of protein.
My doctor has suggested the same. However my results don't support the use of statins and I have politely declined to fill any prescription he may write for them until I have a lipid panel that expresses my need for them.
I have learned a lesson,,, if you have the thought, and I mean the slightest though of ever losing you INS coverage, then only take meds that there is good reasons, and not to ward off the future maybe health problems, If it isn't broken, why fix it..

I have lost my Medical ins, and I can not even express the fear I have of Dying on the clock of the driver that is leading my life into Heaven..Our Government, state Government is out of money to help me, or any one else.

My Point is Dr make money off the drugs they get you on, and Statins have made there rounds over the yrs on big pay backs,
Using Type 1 as a excuse to put a risky drug in your body when you don't have any reg flags on your Lipid panel, I would hold off...Fish oil and Fish itself is healthy for your heart. If your Low Carbing your helping your heart too.

A asprin a day, the 81 mg if you tummy tolerates it should be fine.

The Doctors are not God, so trust your gut:)
What is with doctors and overmedicating!?!? NO NO NO do not take a statin! I was put on one (lipitor 10mg) when I was only 19 years old, weighed 100 lbs, and very active I took it because I trusted my doctor. After about a week on it I was so weak that I could not get out of bed so I called my doctor who said this was a "rare" muscular side effect and told me he would call me in another statin. Uhhh how about no!?! I take fish oil instead which has only benefits and NO side effects. Did I mention my overall cholesterol is more than perfect, my bad is very low and my good is off the charts.
Same here, Lil mama. I will not take statins, due to the side effects, and my cholesterol levels from blood work has always been as yours.... I take Omega three capsules every day...

God Bless,
Brunetta
I had the same experience as you. And so did my mother. My muscles in my legs got so weak I could barely pick myself up from sitting! I've heard a LOT of people that have had this "rare" muscular side effect, and I'm not convinced is as rare as it supposedly is. My mom had to have months of physical therapy to repair the muscle damage she had, and I'm pretty sure I've still got some muscle rebuilding to do in my legs. I have never felt the same strength that I used to have before taking statins. I'll never take them again.
I took statins since my open heart surgery. I was under Elisor ( I think it's a french name) and then my endo gave me Tahor last october. Last monday it was awful: my muscles in my right leg were like you wrote. And today I learnt that my transaminase (asat and alat) I'm so sorry I don't know the words in english! were higher than in September. I'm type 1 with 43 years of type 1 and I got an A1C of 7 , and now it's 8,1....
I'll go to my Endo next monday . I read all your comments and I start to think that those statins are no good for us but only good for money!
