Dear TU people.
Several years ago I researched statin drugs because my MD had suggested I take them because I was diabetic, not because my number was too high. What I found was shocking to me. There are many organizations and meta studies that show these drugs cause dementia, Alzheimer's being at the top of the list. The big fact is that the human brain is 60% LDL cholesterol and when this fat is reduced in the body the brain physically shrinks causing depression first because it reduces serotonin, and the fat is responsible for regenerating neurons. Without LDL the brain degenerates and eventually causes problems. Humans have been meat eaters for millions of years so our systems are fine tuned to do this.
Drug companies practice something called disease mongering, by telling doctors that people with certain diseases should be increasing the profits of their share holders. When I heard this I told my doctor never to insult me like that again and I was super pissed. I eat as much fatty beef as I can, because people with the highest levels of LDL never die of heart disease. Heart disease is caused by stress not LDL and blaming LDL is like blaming the firefighters for the fire.. Have fun and laugh and that is way more effective than a statin. The original study in the 70s eliminated over 90% of their data, typical of greedy drug companies, just like the H1N1 shot which was also a total lie.
I have a writeup about this issue. Just ask.

Maybe you should shop around for new doctors. There are some out there who will discuss and share research. My endo and CDE frequently give me research to look up on the internet and are willing to discuss anything I ask.
Also, I think all statins are not equal. Just because one med gives you pain doesn't mean another in the same class will. That's been my experience with different meds.
My opinion is that if the research shows, which I believe it does, that there is even a small chance that a statin will decrease the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke for me, then I'm willing to take the statin unless it causes side effects for me. My choice has been to take the very low doses of statin recommended by my endo for the past 25 years. I trust him and I think he does care as I know his family well.

Not that people's personal experience is invalid, but when it comes to some claims made...yeah...
Permalink Reply by Paul Curwen on April 18, 2012 at 1:11pm My Dr has tried to get me on Crestor for the last 3 years. Something inside me has always declined... I've read articles against and for this drug but there seems to be more articles (by Drs) against statin use. I personally pay more attention to my BG numbers than worrying about my absolutely normal cholesterol level... Eat good healthy food, exercise and cholesterol will take care of itself in almost all people...
Just my 2 cents, Paul

Permalink Reply by Marty on April 18, 2012 at 4:17pm Someone please tell me what you are using animal insulin for
Permalink Reply by Timothy on April 18, 2012 at 8:13pm Lilly still makes a purified beef insulin, but the C-peptide has been removed.
you can get it if your doctor writes a prescription.
I know an elderly woman that uses it because has has been stable on it for a long time and does not want to switch. The bottle says made in Mexico. If that matters to you.

I am a very rare type 1 diabetic. I have tried using synthetics twice and both times had unlivable complications that descended within months that never happened when using animal sourced insulins. Neuropathy, retinopathy, kidney disease, and hypo-unaware that all went away after switching back to pork insulin. I never eat pork because I love pigs and I thank them every day for making my life easier. Pigs make great companions by the way. I do love cats the best though.

With a prescription I can buy Hypurin Pork insulin made in Britain by Wockardt labs at any pharmacy in Canada. This has been the case since Lilly stopped making Illentin II pork many years ago. I have been using animal sourced insulins since 1959. I have been used to this my whole life and have to eat at certain times and have no flexibility as people using multiple injection methods do. This is my preferred method as after 53 years with type 1 I still have no complications I will never change.

Permalink Reply by Brian Wittman on April 22, 2012 at 3:03pm I take statins because they work for me. Prior to 2013, I had been diagnosed with type 2, and had been living quite well on orals and statins. In late 20o, i had a small stroke that was attributed to high cholesterol. the stroke wasn't that bad, and Icontinued on the meds. In late 2002 I had a disabling stroke, and a higher dosage of Lipitor was prescribed, along with Zetia. Fast forward. My diabetes became uncontrolable and I was put on insulin with poor results. My diangnosos was switched from Type 2 to LADA and a new approach to insulin therapy was taken, including a pump. My last blood panel showed cholesterol levels as they should be and my over-all health better than it has been for years. I will continue to take these medications, whatever the risk. If dementia is a problem, my life is complete anyway, and I have no regrets.
Permalink Reply by Paul Curwen on April 23, 2012 at 8:51am Hi Brian,
Glad meds are working for you. Do you know what your cholesterol level was? You mentioned it was "high"? My level is perfectly normal and my Doc has tried putting me on Crestor as a "precaution". Everything I've read talks about stain drugs offering a benefit when the patient has had a stroke, heart disease or heart attack but if you have normal numbers there is little benefit. I lead a very active life and had all kinds of stress tests which have shown my heart is very strong and healthy (resting rate of 54bpm)...
But I think in your case they are good for you...
