This is HUGE!!

"CHICAGO, April 14 (Reuters) - People with type 1 diabetes who got stem cell transplants were able to go as long as four years without needing insulin treatments, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

They said the process, which involves injecting people with stem cells made from their bone marrow cells, appears to have a lasting effect.

The study involved patients with Type 1 diabetes, formerly called juvenile diabetes, which occurs when the immune system goes haywire and starts attacking itself, destroying insulin-producing cells in the pancreas needed to control blood sugar."

My impression is that the treatments with immunosuppressants were only temporary (although I don't have a specific timeframe specified ... I didn't pay for the full article), which was meant to facilitate the transfer of the new stem cells into the body but was never intended to be a long-term treatment requirement, rather immunosuppressants were merely used to facilitate the "transplant" (if you can call it that). Hope this helps.
I had a friend told me about this, and I am sooooo excited. Not just for myself but for anyone who will benefit from this break through!
If anything, This is HOPE!
I'm excited for you all! Hope and pray it moves along fast with no problems! God Bless America!
Is this treatment available nationwide -- does anyone know? Also, I'm pretty sure insurance will NOT cover it, so how costly are we talking? Thanks for any info. you can provide on these questions. This sounds like a great option that I'd love to try.
It's not a treatment. It's a trial. A successful one, but it's not available to people who aren't in the study.
I am so intrested in this and this is really advanced technology!! I'm only 13 so my mom would have to make the decision If I could actually get this done but I am deffinetly going to tell her about this. Thanks for posting!
Is this for the States or all over like Canada as well just wondering

Gloria Gibbons in Canada
Its in Brazil, and its a trial only.
I'll be damned... Maybe I will see a cure. Maybe not in the 'five or so yrs' I was told in hospital 24 years ago, but hey, hey!

Sign me up, people!
