TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

Update, from a press release issued by the International Diabetes Federation (June 29):

Statement from the International Diabetes Federation Related to Studies Published in Diabetelogia Suggesting Possible Link Between Insulin Glargine and Cancer

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) today called for urgent assessment and responses from regulatory authorities into a possible link between the use of insulin glargine (an insulin analogue) and increased risk of cancer based on findings published on 26 June, 2009 in Diabetelogia, the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

The online data published in Diabetelogia is based on four studies relating to a possible link between a long-acting insulin analogue, insulin glargine and cancer. According to EASD, the findings are based on evidence from studies in Germany, Sweden, Scotland and the United Kingdom. The studies however, are not conclusive.

The International Diabetes Federation understands the concern about the Diabetelogia study findings but urges the diabetes community to wait for the current scientific information to be released and calls for urgent further scientific studies to be undertaken in other countries.

The International Diabetes Federation stresses that it is important that people needing insulin do not stop taking the drug. IDF cautioned that people with diabetes should see their doctor for advice before considering any change to their treatment.

"Our information is that indeed a study is likely to be published soon raising the possibility of a link between Lantus use and a certain cancer type," Sanford Bernstein analyst Tim Anderson said in a research note.

O no! I hope it's not true...I used Lantus from the time it came out until last week :-(
Oh great....I was on it since it first came out, up until a few months ago.
I'm very afraid about that ! I used Lantus since 2004.....
this is scary. i've been on lantus since it came out too. it works great for me i'd hate to have to switch. another side of me thinks i shouldn't worry because it seems like everything causes cancer or is bad for you in some way or another. maybe this will make my decision to switch to levamir an easier one. i so wish i had money for a pump and wouldn't have to worry about long acting insulin anymore!!
I had heard "rumors" of this many months ago....It made my switch to Levemir alot easier.
I too have used Lantus sice dx 2/07. Just what we all need another thing to worry about.
Hmmm, I had read on a blog somewhere that even well-controlled diabetics are still getting complications, and one possible explanation is that the newer insulins like Lantus do not contain c-peptides, which is theorized to protect against complications.

Now a possible risk of cancer from Lantus and the article mentioned a possibility, maybe down the road, Levemir.

Can you even purchase NPH insulin (pork) anymore?

I think I've seen some tudiabetes members who are on NPH... (I think someone also mentioned taking it at bedtime to help with dawn phenomena)

I wonder if this might end up like the thyroid controversy where so many patients want the old-fashioned Armour thyroid (pork), because it is more similar in structure to human thyroid.
NO injectable insulin contains C-peptide.

C-peptide is a byproduct of an intermediate stage of insulin synthesis in the pancreas.

All injected insulins old and new are copies of the final insulin molecule, so the byproduct which breaks off in the intermediate stage can't be there.
i can't open your link
Here's an article on WSJ saying that Sanofi is denying any causal link. http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20090626-714763.html" target="_blank">
Clearly I don't know how to add a link, but you can copy and paste. It sounds like this is all driven by $.
