I have just one thing to add:

OREO CHEESECAKE thats all Im saying, 4 untis per slice, and my average meal bolus is 4.5 units. Still though, OREO CHEESECAKE.

I never really liked large family gatherings not because I don't like my family I just don't like large groups. I guess that makes me a loner type. The only large gathering these days is Christmas at my brother's with all the family members. My mom never did Thanksgiving because she has four sons and no daughters and never thought it worth while to force a choice that she was likely to lose to her daughters-in-laws. My mother-in-law has stopped the large meals also.

I did always enjoy the feast of the holidays but since I have managed to gain control of my weight a feast is not high on my priorities. Nowadays our Thanksgiving is a small affair with just me, the wife, our 2 sons, 2 grandsons, and daughter-in-law. A group that size I can deal with.

So this year like last year I will spend my day avoiding the turkey, yuck, I hate turkey. At least my wife is good enough to bake me a ham.

If I want to attend a family function with friends and/or family, I will. If food is involved, I will do my best to adjust accordingly. I don't blame them for my condition. I was diagnosed T1 in 1974. If I can't adjust to their world by now, I'm doomed :)

Great point, we all do live in their world.

We all make our own choices and I reckon you can enjoy Thanksgiving on your own eating what turns you on, whatever. Have a good holiday, Bill D.

Having survived two years of Thanksgiving with the extended family since my dx, this year my son & I are staying home. I'm glad to avoid 9 hrs in the car, the overfull table (THREE kinds of stuffing), and too many dessert options. Celebrating the holiday with all the fixings was stressful for me.
So far Tgving day plans incl a movie, a hike & maybe some pumpkin pie.

Today was great. I bought no special foods. Ate my normal veggie & protein laden meals. And had a fabulous 8 mile hike. I feel happier and healthier, more relaxed than I do at my family's Thanksgiving.
A lovely relaxed day without the angst I feel over THE MEAL.

Lots of humor here! I, too, have no place to go anymore for any holiday. Everyone I have ever known has moved or deserted me. I guess nobody wants to spend time around such a jinx in case it rubs off on them. Actually, the biggest reason is that nobody is accessible to my power chair.

One thing I found on Thanksgiving while everyone else is having pie -- a banana and a vivid imagination tastes like banana cream pie!! YUM!

I am choosing to spend Thankgiving day alone due to no one understands fully how diabetes works these day. My parents mother was type 1 and died over 40 years ago. My sister is a nurse but she dose not understand how pump works and just gose by whatt friends told here witch is different the way mine works

At the beginning of this post I said that I too am spending Thanksgiving alone, but it's by choice. When I've been around family members I want to spend the day with they always make me a vegetarian dish as they know I won't eat turkey. But as for the carbs, I pick and choose and do eat more carbs than I do at home, but still within reason (I don't eat sugar, so the desserts don't tempt me). I absolutely agree that it's ok to stay home on a holiday if that's your preference for whatever reason, but just curious Bill: Why do your family have to understand how your pump works for you to spend a day with them? You can choose what you do or don't want to eat or even bring your own food. If they insist on talking about your Diabetes with their inaccurate information or criticizing your food choices, can you just tell them: "I'd love to spend this day with you, but if you want me here my Diabetes is off limits as a discussion topic?" I once had to set limits on my father's comments (not D related) and when I put it that way he realized that (after a lifetime of being the way he was) he had to change if he wanted me in his life. It was a revelation to me because I hadn't realized before that day that I could make stipulations on how I wanted to be treated!

Hi Bill,

We usually have Thanksgiving just my BF and I, and when my 21 year old son doesn't have other plans he comes. This year one of our friends is coming to our house because his wife is out of state for job training. He has two dogs too.
My BF was looking up how to make sugar free pumpkin pie and I told him not to bother because I finally got to the point where I don't like carbs much and am happy with the turkey and veggies.
Thanksgiving is pretty stress free for me. I used to hate going to the family gathering though, because everyone would eat all day long and have tons of sweets that back then I couldn't resist.
I am wishing you a lovely and peaceful Thanksgiving, and as you have two dogs, I see you have great company! Sometimes dogs are better than people for companions!
I am glad you made it through Sandy, thank goodness. Sandy was very scary and I am glad that you are okay.
