TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes


November 14 is World Diabetes Day. On that day, at 14:00 hours (local time), thousands of people with diabetes will test their blood sugar, do 14 minutes of exercise, test again and share their results on TuDiabetes or on Twitter.

The event is called The Big Blue Test because blue is the color associated with World Diabetes Day. It is based on a test-in activity that took place July 14, where more than a thousand people with diabetes tested their blood sugar at the same time and shared their results online. This time, the activity incorporates 14 minutes of physical activity to reinforce the importance of exercise.

Participating in this event to raise diabetes awareness on November 14 is easy:
1. At 2 pm (your local time), test your blood sugar.
2. Run, jog, walk the dog or do anything you’d normally do as part of your exercise routine for 14 minutes.
3. Test your blood sugar again.
4. If you are a member of TuDiabetes click on the home page banner and share your readings and what exercise you did between them. If you have a camera, you can also add a photo of your reading(s) or you exercising.
5. If you have a Twitter account, post your readings on Twitter (use the #bigblue hashtag) and link back to: http://bigbluetest.org.

We hope to see most readings posted at 14 hours (2 pm) local time, on November 14. If you are early or late, it’s OK.

What really matters is that you test your blood sugar often and that you exercise regularly. If you don’t have diabetes, you can still take The Big Blue Test. Regardless, tell others to test, exercise and share on November 14.

IMPORTANT:
If due to disability or medical advice you cannot exercise, naturally we don't expect you to do anything that will put you or your health at risk. We'd love you to participate entering your blood sugar readings.

I was a little different. I started at 77. My neighbor stopped by to assist him with outside gutter cleaning. I took 10 carbs, we did the gutter cleaning in one hour. Low and behold my bg returned to 77. That verified my personal knowledge that each carb will raise my bg by 2 points. All and any exercise works!

We just got home from a long day - travelling to visit a college in upstate NY. BUT- Jesse did check at 2pm... 156,
14 min later , after walking up huge hills to get to the administration building he was 237... musta been those french fries he obviously underbolused for at 1:30...

2:00pm...111. Left to pick up my best childhood friend from the airport. She was home on an emergency trip and I was along as support. Because we both we hungry (both diabetic too) we rushed off to eat at an area well-known favorite rib restaurant. I really behaved myself...as did she. We both ate 3 of the 8 ribs piled high on our plates. I ordered the green beans instead of the delicious mac n cheese. Tested 2 hours later...118!! We took the rest of the ribs home to eat at a later date. I did take the opportunity to explain pumping my insulin, as I had to switch out my pod before leaving my friend's mother's home.

I don't get this, but my 2 year old was 279 when she woke up from her nap at 3pm. She played and ran and at about 4pm she was 176.

Hola! Started at 145, exercised 14 minutes, and 135

I tested myself just before 2pm and I was 5.1mmols and did 14 minutes of speed walking and tested again at 2:14 and was 4.2mmols.

at 3pm I was down to 106 from 189!

2 pm 150 then 131 after 14 minutes on exercise bike

I was 139 and after 14 minutes on the exercise bike was 93! I find that if I pedal really, really hard I can get my BG down in about 10 minutes.

I was not able to participate. I actually woke up with blood in my urine, spent 4 hours at church where I lead a workshop on handling grief during the holidays, got home in time to participate but ended up at urgent care with my first ever UTI. The P.A. prescribed antibiotics and an analgesic that took the pain away in moments. I had two 66 blood sugars yesterday so the infection and stress was not causing highs, which I found surprising. Don't like to be that low and am glad I check often.

I am very happy to see that so many people participated! I had every intention also to participate, however I got my H1N1 flu shot on Friday afternoon and I definitely felt the side effects... I was exhausted and sore all day and I spent the whole day in bed. I did check my BGs throughout the day, of course, but definitely no exercise involved...
ps: my BGs were pretty low all day, which I've heard is another side effect of the shot.
