Can't say I've ever heard the term but the online Websters says it's a specialist in diabetes and the first known use was 1970.

When I looked up information on my Endo, he was listed as an Endo, Internal medicine and also a diabetologist.

In Germany a diabetologist is a term for a medical specialist. It is used for a physician that has specialized in diabetology. Usually this means additional and substantial qualifications in this medical field (around 18 months).

I have heard Dr. B use that term from time to time on his internet show and I still occasionally hear it.

Some doctors - diabetologists - specialize in diabetes care, even if their initial training is in the broader field of endocrinology. This is the case in England, France and elsewhere. Given that more than 5% of the population of many countries now have diabetes, there is a large demand for such specialized doctors (as well as nurses and dietitians), and also allows for focussed research and teaching about the condition.

Doesn't the term Diabetologist sound weird? To me it sounds like a witch doctor.

I also hate the term..the diabetic doctor too.

Just call them an Endocrinologist. I feel this way because to use these terms doesn't require a lot of thought or learning of the actual discipline of Endocrinology. I think it gives the doctor too much power and presence than to actually state what they are. I know this is deep thinking. :)

I try to get people to go to an Endo before a primary care physician. That is just me....
