TuDiabetes - A Community for People Touched by Diabetes

ErinArg

"They call them Happy Meals, but they won’t be so happy when they get juvenile diabetes”.

I read an article that was supposedly published in Elle Magazine called MeMe Roth's War and I got so mad! Why do people still assume that overeating leads to "Juvenille Diabetes"? I want EVERYONE to know that I did not overeat Happy Meals as a baby. I was diagnosed at age 2 1/2 as a Juvenille Diabetic (yes, that is what is was called in 1972), and they didn't have Happy Meals back then! We also need to educate the masses so they know it's now referred to as Type I Diabetes.

This article proved a point I have seen frequently here on the TuDiabetes board. We need to talk. We need to be the masses that educate the ignorant. There are too many people who just don't get it. Perhaps it doesn't have a direct impact on their lives, but they have a "fear of the unknown" - DIABETES - and they are all wrong on their information. In my 37 years of being a diabetic I have actually heard people say "Oh, I've had SO much sugar today. I'll probably be diabetic tomorrow." Diabetes Advocacy here I come! I've always, ALWAYS been an advocate to a degree, but I know now, I really need to open my big mouth wider!

Kerri from Six Until Me had a great post on her blog about Brett Michael's and his stupid remark about high blood sugars and sex. That further proves my point.

I really want to go stand on the rooftop and scream! I did not do this to myself. My mother and father did not feed me too much sugar and thus bring on the diabetes. I didn't ask for this. Sometimes, I really hate being diabetic!

And, if this is an old topic, please excuse me. I don't read ELLE and saw this woman Meme Roth on Yahoo news this morning.

I just went over and left a comment, and I think everyone should! (Also, Meme Roth is an idiot.)

Unfortunately uneducated people like her can influence others who also don't know better!

Erin, that's not a rant - that's pointing out a grave error, and reading it irritated the heck out of me!

Arielle -
I went onto her website (see below) and wrote to her directly. She did respond right away and said that she was mis-quoted.

Yes, terrible misquote in Elle. They later apologized in a subsequent issue of the magazine. That is a painful misquote, and I wish I could make it disappear. It's inaccuracy is just awful and I'm sorry for that. The copy of the article on our NAAO website has the correct version.

Take care of yourself, Erin!

I think she sounds like a raving lunatic and like Yvonne says below... she has allowed this compulsion to take over her life. I wish she would spend more time educating herself before she continues on her "crusade".

More on Meme Roth.
I'm SO not impressed.

I kind of feel pity for Meme. She's allowed this compulsion to take over her life. And, this isn't an example of good investigative reporting, but then that's why I don't read fluff magazines like Elle.

I don't read that junk either and it doesn't bother me what they say or anyone else. I just correct them, if it's said in Person. MeMe's a Health Counsellor eh? Ya Erin,we were both tooo young to eat anything of significance by the time we were diagnosed. My Dr. called it Sugar Diabetes in '61, not Juvenile Diabetes. Anyways, Good rant and I'm Glad that you corrected her. I actually don't think that most non-Diabetics are even interested in learning about it, unless they have a Friend or Family member who has it.

Terrie-
How've you been?
Oh, this got me so upset! I was pleased that she responded as quickly as she did, but you can see from her response that the IQ is a little low. You're right...most non-diabetics are not interested. It's sad. I even know people who have friends / family members with diabetes who just don't care. I'm not sure what is worse..."caring" with the wrong information or just not caring at all. Oh, well... at least I was properly educated and know how to take care of myself.

Hi, I'm pretty Good. That's scary that she answered you that fast. Since she said it was corrected, I bet many complained. She was waiting for Ya. :D Well, I can see non-Diabetics point not caring about Diabetes. There are many "popular" diseases that I don't know much about either. The ones who have Family or Friends with it should learn the basics for sure. I'm Glad that you were taught Well Erin. I hope that you are doing Good. ;o)
